so what do you guys think of them??

i painted them just to try it out had some spare bases so why not?

one issue I can't decide between light-drybrushing them with codex grey or jut leave them black.. what do you guys think?

the termie base only had red gore paintjob not yet blood red and blazing orange but just to give you guys what it will look like..

like i make them it is IMHO one of the most easy way to make your bases just greenstuf some squares on your base.. then take a clear base make a bit wet so it won't stick to the greenstuff and gently press it on your greenstuffed base it will texture the top of the grenstof and remove any fingerprints.. it's really easy PM me if you want a full description with pics

That's a good start, a coat of Ardcoat will really give the lava the liquid feel.

Perhaps add in some yellow and even a very light touch of white to really make the lava pop.

the greenstuff has to be thick.. to make the cracks deep enough so ther is enough place to layer up from red gore to yellow /white

so i finished them i added randomly some yellow and putted some white dots in the "heart" of the yellow areas

it isn't very clear on the pics but i drybrushed the tops of the stone pices and they look a ot better very more rock like IMO they are the best bases I ever made
i used a mix of codex grey and chaos black and did a very gentle drybrush

what do you guys think?

@Rutger: remember there are models going to be put on them so they can't be very dense and rock like i need a flat surface i know i want to make them more textured just as you say but they look awesome on the table

Much better - I think the rock might need a bit more work, but as you say, it could be the pictures not picking up the details.

Maybe add a bit of gray to the edges of the rock, other than that a fine job.

anyone got some ideas for a dreadnoughtsized base? not for a dreadnought but with the same base it's a lot of space and i want to keep it sober like the ones above but still want to add some more diaroma to it.. any ideas??

I should add some kind of actual 'rocks' there maybe some little stones from your drive up or something haha

I think the lava is awesome, I would however make the rocks a bit more grainy, lava rock is not as smooth usually.

I have plenty of lava rocks around, and lava stone in my drive way if you'd like some pictures.

An alternative that gives a rougher look:
Cork board.

i was also thinking to add one of these big 'Uns to the base in dutch it's called "leisteen" don't know the english word if you google it i becoms clear if you don't get it with the pic below

Might try putting in some bubbles on the larger lava sections, looking pretty good though, for people who may not know a still active lava flow is usually quite smooth looking, it's not untill it starts to cool and crack that it gets rough.

Blak has a good point, while hot it is indeed still a lot more smooth.

However it would still be quite porous, when near a lava flow, it's about as black as you've made it, just with more air bubbles in it.
Got the chance to see it in person last year
I've got some pictures of the dried lava rock, and I've included some from the country side, which should hopefully give you an indication of what I'm talking about.

Hope that helps, I'll definitely be stealing your idea for these lava bases, and plan to press them lightly with the rocks to get the porous effect.

those pics are amazing it would be awesome if you succeed to create that Ö unfortunatly i lack the skills to make that.. about the bubbles: these were some esting bases so i will add bubbles to following bases besides i still have to fill two dreadnought bases space enough to make a lot of bubbles..

@misterchaos: your base in wonderfull but the lava on your base looks colder than mine i prefer the glowing freakin' hot looking lava it's 40k and i want them to be awesome but thx for the reply

really like them. looks simple enough that a terribad painter/sculpter like myself could pull this off.

nice read and nice work.

it's really easy no big deal just try it out and make shure you use more than enough greenstuff and gently push lines on it no big deal a kid can do it

damn man! that army is going to be hell nice! I'm still very intrested in what you are about to field haha maybe not use both our new armies for the campaign better both use them when completally painted and finished

i am going to field mine as soon as it is finished i don't care facing orks or necrons just have to field them and tell your bro i am challenging him and his eldar force
