"The bearer can re-roll failed rolls to wound." pg 67 of the empire armybook. So if i give this to a wizard and and cast a spell that requires a "to wound" roll can i re-roll failed to wounds. The sword has NOT been FAQ'd yet so it works as stated, so if i were to give this sword to a lv 1 fire wizard and cast fireball will i get to re-roll my to wounds or no? Also will the re-rolls work on one of the major spells like final transmutation.
I don't want to hear how this is, i just want to know if it is leagal, so complain elsewhere.

Just so long as you allow my Sorcerer of Tzeentch with Bloodcurdling Roar to do the same with the Rending Sword.
In seriousness, I'm pretty sure there is a ruling that only gives you the benefits of CC weapons(magic or otherwise) in CC.

It says "The bearer can re-roll failed rolls to wound." It says nothing about close combat. There is nothing else written under the swords description.

I just read the FAQ. I believe what you are thinking of is the mention of bonuses of CC weapons to characteristics. There is a mention of that in the FAQ which states that the bonuses of a CC weapon to your characteristic are only applied when using that weapon. Rerolling failed wounds is not a characteristic, so the FAQ is mostly useless in that regard. There is no Empire FAQ on this either.
I don't want to hear how this is, i just want to know if it is leagal.
Depends on what setting you are asking about. In a tournament, this is definately something you would want to ask the TO beforehand. You would hate to spend the points for the sword on your wizard only to have it ruled against you mid game.
In a friendly game, yes it is legal from a strictly RAW perspective. I'm not sure how "friendly" a game it would be if you tried to pull this though. Then again almost anything can be "legal" in a friendly game if you both agree to it.

Guard Heavy Weapon Crewman

If you were in a friendly setting with me, I'd pick my models and play someone else. It may not be FAQ'ed, but that interpretation is not within the spirit of the game. CC weapons rules apply to when that weapon is used, unless explicitly saying otherwise.
In a tournament setting, I'd have a hard time seeing you get that past a judge.
And no, even it you did get to reroll to wound, it wouldn't work against final transmutation as you are not wounding. On a 5+ things go poof.

RAW seem to suggest that yes indeed you would be able to reroll to WOUND via spell attacks.
RAI are a little unclear, but I would argue that there is precedence for RAI to agree with the previous statement.
"Hammer" of Sigmar priest spell has a similar effect where the spell enchants a NONmagical weapon. Furthermore that enchantment effect has been FAQ'ed to indeed work with wizards wounding and even ranged models wounding.

GW FAQ'ed the chaos version of that, and it only works in close combat.
If you're doing it in a tournament, check with the judges before hand, and expect to take a hit on sportsmanship if it gets scored.
In a friendly game, this type of thing usually makes it harder to find opponents in the long run.

Yea, it is only for tournement games. I dont take a killer list in friendly games. So for tournements ask the TO and never in friendly games. Makes sense right?

I would swear that there's a section in the BRB that says that unless stated otherwise, magic weapons only confer their benefit during the close combat phase. I am about 300 miles from my rulebook atm but maybe somebody can find it.
I note that if you want to achieve the same effect, you can cast the "hammer of sigmar" prayer on the wizard. The FAQ does specifically state that the hammer covers all rolls to hit and wound, including shooting, magic, impact hits, and so on.

The rulebook FAQ says the following:
Q: Does a magic item or spell that gives a bonus to a
characteristic, do so bonus for all rules purposes (e.g. the effect of
spells, characteristic tests, etc)? (p4)
A: Yes, except for magic weapons or where the description of
the item or spell specifically says otherwise
And
Q: When does a weapon that gives a bonus to a characteristic
give that bonus?(p4)
A: Most weapons, including magic weapons, state when the
bonus is given. For example, a model with the Fencer’s
Blades will always have Weapon Skill 10 whilst a model with
a great weapon will only have +2 Strength when striking an
enemy in close combat. When a weapon does not say when
the characteristic bonus applies, then it only applies when
striking, or being struck, in close combat
Those only refer to characteristic bonuses, but it does suggest that it doesn't work. Still, that's all I see, so you probably can RAW.

Huh?
As much as I would say it does not work, the FAQ you posted shows an example of when it works all the time. Fencers blades gives you WS10 all the time(it doesn't say when), where as a great weapon only gives you +2 strength in close combat (which the basic rule does say when).
This was one of my least favorite parts of the FAQ, as the wording doesn't clear up a whole lot.

I was mainly referring to "A: Yes, except for magic weapons," and "When a weapon does not say when
the characteristic bonus applies, then it only applies when
striking, or being struck, in close combat"
There is an example of when it applies all the time, but then says that when the weapon doesn't say then it only applies in CC.
I do agree though that it doesn't clear up much, but perhaps a guide. I still think it probably works as the OP thinks, RAW, just that this might be a guide (or arguing point) otherwise.

strictly RAW, it works like you desire.
I wouldn't pull this in any sort of friendly game though, or even in a fairly casual tournament.
definitly ask the TO before hand.
