I thought I read somewhere that if a fast skimmer with embarked troops that moves flat out gets destroyed, or at least explodes, then all embarked units are destroyed as well. But I can't find it. Can someone point me in the right direction?
And if that is the case, how does this apply to a Dreadnought in a Stormraven. It says that if the stormraven explodes, the dread takes a str 4 on the rear armour. But does that same thing happen if it moves flat out and blows, or is the dreadnought also destroyed?

BRB FAQ spells it out.
It is only on the same (player) turn the vehicle moves Flat out that troops canot disembark.

It's in the newest FAQ.
Basically if you move your fast transport flat out in your movement phase and wrech it on terrain or something else, everything inside is gone.
However, if someone shoots it, the troops bail out.
And yes, everything inside the transport is gone when you wreck it in your movement phase. Everything.

Thanks guys. I thought it was if it was destroyed until the beginning of it's next turn. Now I know I can move my stormraven flat out and not worry about my units inside assuming I don't hit diff or dang terrain.

It's not directly stated. It comes from the fact that in the turn (IE Player Turn) that you move Flat-Out you can't disembark. The Destroyed-Wrecked result (including immobilization while moving flat-out) requires you to disembark.....since you aren't allowed to do so, the unit is destroyed.
The FAQ changes it so that the same thing happens for Destroyed-Explodes (which does not require you to disembark according to the BRB).
If a Stormraven is loaded up with a unit + dreadnaught and is destroyed while moving flat-out in its own turn, then both the unit and dreadnought are toast because they are not allowed to disembark.

And assuming you don't accidentally kill your own SR some other way. Like scattering a blast weapon onto it or something. Stormraven + Vindicator can theoretically be a bad combo if you try to use them too close together.

I've had a guy do it enough with his valk, every time he does it and before the FAQ he would always, always try to argue otherwise even though the rulebook made it impossible to disembark.
Just don't fly into stuff, also check what rules your opponent has, some things can make clear terrain difficult/dangerous. Beware the thunderfire cannon too.

To be fair the Valkyrie does have a rule to allow troops to disembark after it moves flat out so the rulebook prohibition wouldn't necessarily apply.

Except the Valk exception only works if you deepstrike out DURING the movement phase. If you elect not to do that, and then wreck on some terrain, you don't get to suddenly go "Oh JK I'm gonna do the deep strike drop thing out of the back about 4 inches behind where I was". If you didn't declare it before you wrecked the vehicle, they die. There is no exception to that.

If you flat out into a rock it's still during the movement phase and they can still disembark as long as they follow the proper procedure. Nothing says it must be during the movement phase either. It simply says "If the Valkyrie has moved flat out, passengers may still disembark, but must do so as follows."
Given the prohibition against disembarking is only in the flat-out rules, the Valkyrie has an exception to get around it and so the contradiction of must vs. cannot doesn't come up.
Prior to the FAQ that says they die it would have been perfectly reasonable to Grav-Chute insert them after pile-driving their valkyrie into the dirt. Even after unfortunate friendly fire incidents.

Ok, but this is not prior to the FAQ. As of now, the FAQ says that if you move it flat out, and then wreck it on some terrain or something inside that same player turn, everything inside dies. Period.

Agreed, right now in the post FAQ world they all die.
But my comments were all regarding someone getting annoyed at insisting that, pre-FAQ, his guardsmen could disembark from a wrecked, flat-out Valkyrie. And at that point they could, because their rules say they can without any restriction that it be a voluntary disembark. So the player trying to disembark was correct in the rules, even if the execution of those rules would look wonky.

No, he wasn't. All the FAQ did was confirm what the rules already said, that a unit cannot disembark from a transport that moved flat out in the player turn in which it moved flat out. So his insisting was wrong.

I thought the exact same thing. I wasted a lot of SRG moves afraid that my SG and Dreadnought might get destroyed.

So with the disembarking, I would think that you could move the Stormraven, and if it's going to land in dangerous terrain, you could disembark the unit before taking the test, but if the test is taken before you disembark then you can't disembark.

Disembarkation is movement for the unit doing it. You have to completely finish moving one unit before moving another. You can't move unit A five inches, move unit B, then go back and move A two more inches.

Well, couple points.
Since the embarked passengers would die only if you were moving flat out, this is a good time to point out that if you move flat out, you may not disembark at all.
However, BA and IG (and probably GK) have a special rule that allows them to jump out somewhere along the flight path, even if the SR/Valk moved flat out, so you could use that.
