Thank you for reading my post.

I'm a Warhammer Fantasy player that is putting together a Warhammer 40K army. I've not played 40K in at least fifteen years, so I have no idea what is effective. In Fantasy I like to play armies that move quickly and take the fight to my opponent so I've settled on Blood Angels. I've got three lists I'm thinking about and I'd like some advice please.

List 1: DoA Death Company
HQ - Astorath the Grim 220
TR - 5 Death Company w/Jump Packs 175

HQ - Reclusiarch w/Power Fist, Jump Pack 155
TR - 10 Death Company w/Jump Packs 350

FA - 3 Land Speeders w/x2 Multi Meltas 240 (tank hunters)

FA - 5 Vanguard Veterans w/Jump Packs 165
EL - Sanguinary Priest w/Jump Pack 75

FA - 5 Vanguard Veterans w/Jump Packs 165
EL - Sanguinary Priest w/Jump Pack 75

HQ - 5 Honor Guard w/Chapter Banner, Jump Packs 195

HQ - 5 Honor Guard w/Jump Packs 165

Everyone in the army would have Furious Charge and Feel No Pain but I'm concerned that the army is so small. I put a powerfist on the chaplain because the model I'd like to use has one and I've always loved that model. I may have to drop the chapter banner if some of the models I've ordered have different weapons so I can be WYSIWYG.

List 2: DoA Death Company

Drop the Land Speeders and 1 Honor Guard unit for 3 Death Company Dreadnoughts with drop pods, blood claws and heavy flamers. Again, I'm concerned about sinking all of my points in a small army and I'm concerned I would lose mobility.

My third list resolves the size issue.

List 3: DoA Blood Angels

HQ - Reclusiarch w/Power Fist, Jump Pack 155
TR - 5 Death Company w/Jump Packs 175

HQ - Librarian w/Jump Pack, Smite, Sanguine Sword 125
TR - 10 Assault Marines w/2 Meltaguns

TR - 10 Assault Marines w/2 Meltaguns

FA - 3 Land Speeders w/x2 Multi Meltas 240 (tank hunters)

FA - 5 Vanguard Veterans w/Jump Packs 165
EL - Sanguinary Priest w/Jump Pack 75

FA - 5 Vanguard Veterans w/Jump Packs 165
EL - Sanguinary Priest w/Jump Pack 75

HQ - 5 Honor Guard w/Chapter Banner, Jump Packs 195

HQ - 5 Honor Guard w/Jump Packs 165

EL - 5 Terminators w/Lightning Claws, Sgt - Thunderhammer, SS 205

Most importantly, please let me know if the lists are not legal due to a mistake. Secondly, I'd like to know if they are effective. I really want to use that chaplain with the power fist, so I'd prefer to keep him. I do not like the Astorath model at all so would convert a different one. I've already bought 15 death company (I didn't expect to win all 3 lowball auctions) but can convert 10 into vanguard squads if I need to.

Again, thank you for reading.

I am going to just throw a couple of ideas out for both lists.

On the VV Squads, you will need to add some upgrades. I would recommend a PF, a couple of PW and Melta bombs. This makes them highly versitile for either popping tanks or charging into elite units. Also, you will not be able to effectivly use the VV if you attach a Sang Priest to the unit. It negates their special rule by adding an independent character to the unit.

If you are taking HG, spam them with either plasma/melta/flamer etc.

Regular Assault Squads will need a PF or PW. I like to run the fist personally.

The libby is the best HQ choice in the codex. I recommend using him with Unleash Rage and Sanguine Sword.

Beef up your death company a bit. right now they are not taking advantage of the weapons options available to them. A couple of PW's or PF's will make them all the more brutal.

Land Speeders are fun IMO! But they are a glass hammer especially in a squadron.

Anyways, just a few tid bits for you to mull over. Hope something helps you.

Cheers.

Librarian is your best hq choice.
Dc and sang guard are difficult to use and suck up a huge ammount of points.

Assault squads also need a pf. (235 pts a squad)

priests can't go with vets if the vets are going to heroic intervention.

Speeders give them hf too because when you are facing a horde those speeders are a waste of points.

The best thing to do with honor guard is give them special weapons meltas or flamers.

List 2 I would take out the dc and the rec. Put the priests in the assault squads and give the assault squads pf.

Lib powers for this that would work better would be shield and rage because you can do both one in opponents shooting phase and the other in your assault phase.

I would drop the termies as well they don't get the 1d6 scatter and are too slow.

Suggestion for some support fire power 3 5 man dev squads with 4 ml each it works well

What others have said is true, plus you have no scoring units in the first list.

Dealth Company are nasty, but with no Power Weapons they are just one big tar pit that you cannot control where they go.

On Dakka he was Eldanar. In our area, he was Lee. R.I.P., Lee Guthrie.

I am going to have to rework my lists.

Being new I was unaware that only Troops could hold objectives and that land speeders had to travel in squadrons.

I'll put the weapons into units to match the models sold. From what I can tell, this would be:

1) Death Company - my models have 2 power fists and a power sword. I may put in more PW.
2) Vanguard Veterans - 3 power swords and 2 plasma pistols? One has a 2 handed power sword. What are the rules for it?

I'm definitely dropping the speeders. They can't accomplish much in a squadron.

Do all models in a unit have to take melta bombs? Can 3 veterans take melta bombs and the other two use their plasma pistols?

Sorry for the newb questions, but I last played 40K under Rogue Trader rules when the Eldar Aspects were being playtested. That was a LONG time ago.

The answers to all your most recent questions are in your codex. If you don't have one, you need to get one ASAP.

The two-handed Power Sword is a Glaive Encarmine. It is a Master Crafted Power Weapon, that is sadly two-handed. A Power Weapon is a better choice unless the model has a Storm Shield.

Don't take Plasma Pistols in VV squads. They can either shoot or assault the turn they deepstrike, not both, and you shouldn't expect them to live for long after that.

Another general point: Don't mix vehicles and jump infantry, at least when you're starting out. Either take no vehicles, to waste your oppoent's anti-tank capabilities, or take a lot of vehicles to overwhelm them. Either everything is in a vehicle, or nothing is.

By the way, here is a list of units that are generally accepted to be good in a Blood Angels army: Librarians, Mephiston, Assault Marines, Sanguinary Priests, Predators, Baal Predators, Vindicators, Razorbacks, Land Speeders, Devastators, Vanguard Veterans, Furioso Dreadnoughts.

Units to stay away from: Tactical Marines, Captains, Scouts, anything on a bike except maybe Attack Bikes, Techmarines, Regular Terminators, Rhinos, Sanguinary Guard, any special character except Mephiston.

Wait until you really know what you're doing: Stormravens, Death Company.

Thank you for the comments. I do have a Codex, and a Rulebook, but they are big books and I don't really know them yet.

Is this list better?

HQ - Librarian, Jump Pack, Sanguine Sword, Shield of Sanguinus 125
HQ - 5 Honor Guard, Jump Packs, 4 Flamers, Melta Bombs 205

HQ - Librarian, Jump Pack, Sanguine Sword, Shield of Sanguinus 125
HQ - 5 Honor Guard, Jump Packs, 4 Flamers, Melta Bombs 205

TR - 10 Assault Marines, 2 Meltaguns, Sgt: Powerfist 235
EL - Sanguinary Priest, Jump Pack 75

TR - 10 Assault Marines, 2 Meltaguns, Sgt: Powerfist 235
EL - Sanguinary Priest, Jump Pack 75

TR - 10 Assault Marines, 2 Meltaguns, Sgt: Powerfist 235
EL - Sanguinary Priest, Jump Pack 75

FA - 5 Vanguard Veterans, Jump Packs, 2 Power Weapons, Sgt: Power Fist 205

FA - 5 Vanguard Veterans, Jump Packs, 2 Power Weapons, Sgt: Power Fist 205

I like this army and can theme it after the Fire Hawks. The heavy flamer/melta weapons will allow me to model a lot of fire and I think the army could look really cool.

I look forward to hearing what you guys have to say.

Thank you.

Problem with first list is you have no scoring troops in the second at least you have some Assault Marines but you will find soon enough Death Co are just too expensive.

The latest list is loads better. In fact I think it's spot on actually.
