Team Dakka,
There is some debate as to what size the folding fortress is supposed to be and what the rules say.
I'm of the position that it should be the actual GW watchtower model or something of similar size or if you scratch build it, it should still only function like a watch tower despite its size. I'm at work and don't have the brb on me, but what say ye?
DAH
EDIT: And by functions as a watchtower despite its size, I mean, it only has 3 levels for shooting purposes.

Page 505 of the BRB
... place a watchtower building (or scratch-built structure of a similar size) in your deployment zone to represent the Folding Fortress. This is treated as a standard building...
Going over to page 126 for the rules for buildings doesn't help much. While it does detail the "5 shooters per floor" rule, it makes no mention of how many floors a building should have, how many a watchtower specifically might have, or really anything useful at all.
In the end, there is no real " RAW" for this. You'll have to agree with your opponent, or get a ruling from a TO depending on where you are. Just remember it's all supposed to be for fun, and you should be able to avoid most beatings.

I find it fairly common when playing with my friends. Random dude in a store...? probably not so much.

The game is a social contract from start to finish. If you cannot agree on something as blindingly obvious as "your 24 story tower is taking the p£$$" , then the game is probably going to be a tedious one...

Did your opponent build a 24 story tower? (unlikely)
Did I knock it over on "accident" and crush your army? (most likely)

A player did this at 'Ard Boyz last year... the TO simply ruled he could only have 3 levels, and that was that.
They really should clarify it in writing, but any TO with sense can make that ruling... imho.

There's actually a watchtower model. It has 3 levels. I think that, like other conversions, a scratch built tower can fudge certain aspects of its design but things like the number of levels and the size of the building's footprint should be kept in pretty close to the original. If only to avoid arguments.

Please put this on your sig if you know someone, work for someone or are related to someone who suffers from stupidity. Stupidity is real and should be taken seriously. You could be sitting next to a sufferer right now. There is still no known cure for stupidity and sympathy does not help. But we can raise awareness.... 93% won't copy and paste this because they don't know how to copy and paste |

Yeah, I never have issues with the building with my friends. I own a GW watch tower, so we just use that when we need to. But my friend was at the semis in california for 'Ard Boyz this year and some guy rolled up with a 10 story folding fortress. Admittedly, he said he only made it 10 levels because he thought 12 would be too cheesy. /eyeroll
But he put two slann and a horde of skinks in it and some other characters. My friend destroyed it with his skaven stuff (either the bell or cracks) and the guy complained for an hour and would not concede that he had just lost a bunch of models due to it being destroyed. I think he lost both slann, a bunch of minor characters, and half his skinks.
All I have to say is, that will WTF teach him for making such a ridiculously large tower and putting most of his army in it against S-K-A-V-E-N.

Hell yes that will teach them!
Any models not able to be placed are lost, and i seem to remember you need an Init test or die for the skaven stuff, hence the fat frogs going...
