So i was reading up on the Imperium and i learned that the Emperor wiped out religion and the notion that he was god at every turn; yet during the heresey that went to an all time high. So How did they manage to get a majority of the Imperium to go with the God idea(aside from murder), why did the Imperial leadership not stop that, and what was the point of taking control of the Imperium like that?

The emperor tried to wipe out the imperial cult like other religions but was killed before he could succeed. After the HH the imperium was still in shock. They had other priorities and so let the religion grow. While they tried to stop it at first it wasn't possible. Without the Emperor the imperium had lost a lot of it unity. The Highlords realised the imperial cult could be beneficial so made it the official religion. Now they use it as powerful motivational tool as it is often the only similary between planets.

The Emperor wasn't really doing a good job of it anyway, considering how often he appeared as a god before mortals to humans, especially when reuniting with his Primarchs, or being surrounded by them. Frankly, I think he originally intended to eventually, in the long term, become a godlike figure to the populace, to be worshiped and obeyed as such. Then Horus screwed everything up.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Here is my little theory.

the Emperor fully intended to be worshiped as a god, but there were 4 little problems with that.

the Emperor knew that the Chaos Gods drew their power from the worship of mortals.

the Emperor then drew up a cunning plan to cut the chaos gods off from the mortal realm.

he would stamp out all humanities religions. Alien races would be completely destroyed(easier to getr rid of the whole thing rather then stop them from worshipping)

then, with no religion anymore. the Emperor would give humanity access to the webway(making them no longer reliant on the warp)

then the chaos gods would be utterly cut off from humanity(and all sapient races by extension) and humanity would be safe.

now the Emperor would be worshipped as a god.

Pretty much what I think is probably correct as well.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.
