I bought the Tyranid battleforce a while ago, and now I'm looking to get a tyrant.
I figure on taking wings, paroxysm and leech, but what weapon loadouts would be the most versatile/useful?
I'm also interested in whether any of you think I should go with foot tyrant with tyrant guard instead?

Any advice is welcome, but I'm not interested in taking swarmlord. Sorry, I just don't like him.

take two twin-linked devourers or if your wanting to rocket into cc take one twin-linked devourer and lash and sword. personally i find the walking tyrant with the pimp guard crew is far more scary than a flyrant.......there are just way to many ap-3 guns trolling around to send a 4 wound monster anywhere.....thats why we have harpies!

just grab 12 dice and give them a roll and remember they are s-6 and twin linked and inflict a negative to LD....just too cool.....if anyone else post after this telling you to take a venom cannon they are not your friend gun is silly.....spending 200 plus points on a small blast that has wet noodle ap is not worth anything.....

I own way to many Chaos Daemon models...why do I need over 200 pink horrors?

Except that the Heavy Venom Cannon has twice the range of the twin-linked Brainleech Worm devourer (36" instead of 18"). What's another turn or two of shooting "worth?"

Alles klar, eh, Kommissar?

Nothing when it's such a piece of crap. You're better off running forward to get to combat faster at that point...

Yeah I tend to agree with yermom in that the extra 2 turns of shooting don't mean a gosh darn thing when you'll have a tough time cracking even a rhino. I mean by all means, spend 200 points to MAYBE kill 70 points worth of transport per game, if that's what gets you going.

Flyrants can work just fine.

Give hime Lash whip,Bonesword and TL devours. Then give him a Gargoyle Screen and let some Hormagaunt follow you = Evil CC rocket moving up.

But again. I'm not saying that you should take a Flyrant. It all depends on what playstyle you like

Thanks for the advice, I think I'm going to go with one TL devourer and wings.
On a related note, do you give "special weapons" to your termagants, or just run with fleshborers?

If you have points to spare, giving the initial squads of gaunts some devourers packs them with suprising punch. However, at this point the models become 10 points per model, so protect them well.

Assuming your running minimal squads to take Tervigons as troops, 100 points per every ten without other upgrades.

Now then, Tervigons, I hear a lot of good stuff about them, and they seem useful on paper, but are they worth all the modelling work you have to put in?

Yes. T6, W6 MC troop choice. Spawns more troops. Gives feel no pain. Whats not to like ...

They are psykers and their ability to poop out Gaunts can fizzle, even on turn 1, but you get a large body that can babysit an objective in cover and dare opponents to come get it.

It is not a powerhouse in CC, so be careful to commit it since when it dies, the termies around it get smacked as well for losing their momma.

So my shopping list now consists of:
Carnifex (to convert into tervigon)
Hive Tyrant
Possibly/probably some extra Termagants.

But Trygons are so awesome as well!
So hard to choose...

Sudden Inspiration: how about converting the WHFB aracnorok spider thing into a tervigon?
Add some birthing sacs, a new head... This one could just work...

To the special gaunt upgrades:

Don't take Devourer gaunts if you have some spare points.
Field what is needed. Take 20 of them in a Mycetic spore and drop them near some infantry that you would like to get rid of. For these 20 gaunts you will pump 60 shots out. IMO that's a lot of shots. Against T3 armys they leave not a single survivor

Well how big is your army? What playstyle do you prefer?

Tyranids is such a different army and they can be played in countless ways.

A Tervigon is normally HQ, but for each Gaunt unit you have, you may field on as a troop choice. This means that with Hive command, you are able to outflank with it and it is able to hold objectives.

What role do you want it to take on the battlefield?
If you outflank it, you can support genestealers with FNP and if you have given it TS and AG, you produce some effective CC support too.
Do you want it to hold objectives?
Do you want it to provide a Gaunt shield in a Deathstar formation?

Tyranids are all about synergy.

Trygons can really hurt, but they are often used as shooting absorbers. if you deep strike a trygon alone, It will with 75%-80% possibility die, unless you play against a very poor player. maybe the Trygon was escorting some raveners behind it and do to the size and the threat a Trygon does, its death gave the Raveners the possibility to live in circurmstanses they would normally have been killed.
You there is also many who prefer to just walk them.

My standard Tyrant is a Flyrant with TL Devourers, Paroxysm, Leech Essence, Hive Commander, and Old Adversary.

The key upgrade is wings.

Can a hive tyrant have both Hive Commender and Old Adversary? I thought it was a case of choose 1 out of HC, OA or Terror (which is crap)

What's not to like? Once they role doubles their usefullness plumets to almost zero. When not able to spawn troops, they're basicaly a horrible version of a Trygon. I would take Trygon instead, but that's personal preference.

"As I looked into its dead black eyes, I saw the terrible sentinence it had in place of a soul. Behind that was the steel will of its leader. Further still I could feel its primogenitor coldly assessing me from the void. And looking back from the deepest recesses of the aliens mind I perceived what I can describe only as an immortal hunger.
We can slay the tyranids on our worlds, blast their fleets from space, grind their armies to torn and ruined fragments. But their hunger? That is beyond our ability to slay."
