Normally for the length of the campaign being run. It's an on-going narrative, you see.

Probably work

Yeah, we keep characters for as long as the campaign runs. There are a few characters I have (with DM permission) carried over to other campaigns. Even so, I still have a few 'archetypal' characters in my mind that I've run different iterations of. Daedalus is actually the name of my Gnome Sorcerer, which was the first character I played. He's moderately deranged from sampling one too many of the alchemical solutions he's developed, and now partakes of them recreationally. As a result, he sometimes has a conversation with his imaginary friend and deity, the Kool-Aid man. I sometimes play him, even if its a brand new character. I just claim he was level drained by something terrible and then forgot about his past.

So in a nutshell, you can do anything you want as long as the DM approves!

You normally make a character and keep it until it dies. Different campaigns may work differently in that regard though.

Wait, campaigns last more than 3 sessions?

I have a bad gaming group, so a character never gets past 5th level.

I however do have all of my characters saved, so I can pull them out if needed for a one off.

I should note, that my Deathwatch character should last a long time... although it is currently my second one as they killed off my first one for the 2 months I couldn't be there.

Nine years of 2.5 AD&D have netted me my main character; Magus (yes, Magus) the Drow Lich Wizard.

I havn't played him for several years now, and the character has virtually been retired, but I still hold him close to my heart. Especially since he was forced to slay all 4 of his level 16-18 (no easy feat in 2.5, especially since our DM was stingy) party members to attain lichdom. Needless to say, my mates really had no desire to play with him again after that, seeing as to the fact that THEIR 6 year old characters had just been killed and had their souls consumed. Ahh, life as a drow...

Usually for the length of the campaing, or if the character gets not-fun to play.

In general, most people don't level more than every 5-6 hours of play, so you won't see higher levels unless you play the same character for a while. (Or skip!)

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

Wow, we typically don't level up for 3-4 sessions of play at 5-6 hours each. :(

5-6 may be a low estimate. I guess we're probably at more like 10-12 of 'actual' gaming time... Our game nights have a lot of filler as we grab dinner, etc

I keep my characters as long as possible, but different campaigns have different needs, so I put a character on vacation until he is needed again. I've had my Dwarf Cleric|Fighter (level 16) get his head split open by a Sladd tadpole hatching, we revived him, but in RP enough was enough, and I brought in a new one because, really, my dwarf wasn't needed any longer. So I brought it my current character, a Shifter rogue multi-classed into fighter. And he will be around until he dies, is no longer needed, or I start DM'ing after a few more sessions when our current campaign is done.
