As far as I understand, the looted wagon can be anything orky with the codex-allowed weapons that is the same dimensions as a battlewagon.

My brother (tight on money) wants to buy a GW kit and bits (yes I know not the best way of saving money). Thus, his plan is a land raider, as shown in the codex (I think). Two questions:
1. Is this the best way of doing it (with GW kits I mean)?
2. What is the best kit to use for bitz and making it look orky?

Thanks in advance

A looted wagon can be anything orky enough. For example a looted Rhino-chassis, a looted Chimera-chassis, a looted Raider to name a few.

If you want to use only GW kits and not orkify it yourself with plasticard and whatnot I'd suggest Battlewagon and the base that you'll orkify.

Forever a pone.

Will a battlewagon kit have enough parts to make a BW AND orkify another vehicle?

Here is a Looted Wagon I just sold to my FLGS owner:

Just an old MK1 Rhino I for $5.00 USD, a "For Sale" sign from Wal-mart, FW Grots and spare parts from an Ork Battlewagon.

I generally buy just what I need off ebay's bits department and time the auctions to combine shipping charges.

Rhino hull and tracks are like 7-10 bucks then just buy the orky bits you want. Usually cheaper than buying one kit model let alone two. The three looted wagons in my gallery all started as ebay hulls.

Poor orks... Why can't they be the good guys for once?
All they've ever really wanted is whatever you have...

I my opinion Orky means that its:

1) can be assembled with junk yard parts
2) has been assembled with nails.
3) little or NO forging or smelting of the metals
4) is painted in red (cause red makes things go faster)

but way this is a good idea, esept using games workshop parts is not my idea of keeping cost down... good idea though

Well, I just sort of assumed that's the way everyone does it these days.

Besides, It looks cool if you have a converted tank that your opponent is playing with...

sizewise, most people's looted wagons are based on rhino/chimera chassis. Nothing to stop you using a land raider, but it's not a cheap option. As Pipboy101 above shows, many people use secondhand/damaged/old models for looting - it makes perfect sense for looted wagons, as they're literally made from whatever brokendown vehicles the orks happen to find on the battlefield.

If your bro really wants to save money, he should learn to make rivets and use plasticard - it's perfect for orky conversions. That lets you 'stretch' your purchases, e.g. as you suggest, using a BW kit plus plasticard and whatever's in the bits box, to make more than one vehicle.

Thanks. I'm sure we can make it look orky with our powers combined I think what his biggest problem is is getting the ork weapons, but that shouldn't be a problem when siphoning off spares from the BW.

plasticard? I hear about it a lot but I'm not sure what it is. We in South Africa probably use a different name for it... clarification would be appreciated.

If you can get ahold of "For sale" signs at your local DIY store then you have plasticard. The name plasticard is used for many products of sheet plastic and rods. I use plastic rods that I pick up in a pack of 10 at my local hobby shop. They sell different thicknesses of plasticard sheet but I use just "For Sale" signs because they are cheep, large, easy to cut and the right size for armor plating.

Here is what it looks like not painted so you can see the different plasticard layers I used:

Hay if you need spare bits to make your wagon look looted from old defeated space marine foes I have some Spares from my venerable Dreadnought, Rhino and Landspeeder!

Basing on a Rhino is really the cheapest option, but depending on how he plans to have it kitted might make a difference too.

If he plans on using it as a boomwagon, you might consider some off brand 1:32 tank from somewhere. Or a something else with a big gun. Makes the process easier.

But if he's playing orks, he should buy some styrene sheets, tubes and bars, and get to building. That's half the fun of being an ork player.

I'm not sure, but I think he won't take a boomgun.

Thanks for the advice, it'll certainly get him going. Rhinos aren't that bad of an investment

It depends on how you want to build your BWs but you are in luck as they are best in game terms with nothing except a deffrolla and 1 big shoota leaving you with like 4 big shootas, 1 big turret with a kannon or zapp gun and a metric gak load of ork glyths

So yes you could buy a BW kit build it up lean (best in game terms anyways) and have pleanty of bits left over to make some great lookig conversions.

Damn I cant wait to the GW legal team codex comes out now there is a dex that will conquer all.

Great to know! As far as GW kits go, not all of them have the greatest range of spares, just wanted to make sure.
