Okay...
Swamp boards are rarely seen and maybe this particular swamp has an Imperial promethium refinery in it (giving you a few objective points) or possibly the remnants of an Eldar webway gate or even a downed Tau shuttle.

A game board should generally be 4 feet by 6 feet. I would build it to be modifiable so you're not stuck playing basically the same game over and over again.

I like the idea of it being modifiable. anything but the imperial guard, i want this to be a different race.

If you want a modular board, the starting point is a 6x4 foot piece of wood. I would try and make it double-sided: say one side painted grey, and one sanded with very fine sand and then sealed: voila, the basis of a desert and an urban table, capable of being easily stored. Then start making buildings, bunkers, roads, rock formations, etc. Concentrate on getting plenty of terrain for one side first. You could do this for any two types of terrain, as long as the base board is fairly flat, and doesn't have any sand or flock that is likely to flake off everywhere.

I like the idea of have the two sided field. i think that the 6x4 is to big, for the games that we will be having on it. i was thinking about trying to make an underground tunnel system that was connected to bunkers and sewers.

That sounds awsome but how would you do it ????

Have a table that is heaps thick then, cut out walk ways using my foam cutter it will only be for troops.I can get heaps of foam.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

I have a board which has about 1.5 inch thick foam - it allows me to cut down into it to make trenches and craters etc.

It is sectioned into 2ft by 2ft sections to help make it more modular.

Then make some hills/etc based on CD's or thin wood boards to block LOS, a few buildings and so on and you are sorted.

In terms of tables that look cool that you don't tend to see too often - overgrown jungle fire bases/ruined temple/city boards look cool.

6x4 is the "Standard" table size for a 1000-2500 pt game. If you are only going to be playing 1000 pts or less, you could do 4x4.

Doesn't most plywood come in sheets of 4x8 anyways. A lot of people like having some extra space around the edge of the table for dead models, dice, and reserves.

I would second the recommendation for having the table be mostly flat, and then adding terrain onto it. It would maybe be less detailed, but it would be more interesting to play on.

It would be much thinker then 1.5 inch. i was thinking about a foot think, and make them look like old mines.

Do you mind if I ask how much experience you have with this kind of thing? Frankly, huge blocks of foam with tunnels cut out of them sounds like a nightmare to build, let alone to paint. If this is your first board, you want something achievable, not something you will slave away on for months only to find out it's unworkable. The thing about elaborate boards with detail worked in, is that you can't make them modular without a load of seperate panels, which raises its own set of problems with securing them together, making sure they match up etc.; and you can't play on them until the whole project is finished. Whereas a wooden board with seperate terrain pieces, you can crack on playing with makeshift terrain and do the pieces as inspiration strikes.

For size, you definitely want at least a 6' by 4'. You can always screen or tape a section off when you want to play smaller games, but if you only build a 4' by 4', you will find yourself needing to buidl an expansion sooner or later.

Mines and trenches does sound like a good idea if you make your bourd the same size as "Assasin Actual's" board they could both join onto my cities of death board for apocalypse!

Foam can be hard to work with but, i have a foam cutter and it is so much easier to cut thing out of foam. we have to learn at some time.

I have decided to try to make a swamp board with ruins, and hopefully a terrain peace for each different army that i can find in the house.

I know I'm late, but you could do an eye of terror or a battlefield somehow in the warp. Make everything twisted and chaosy

The eye of terror sounds like a good idea but i dont play with anyone that collects chaos anymore so it would be a little bit out of place. i will upload some photos when i get started.
