As far as other editions, I forgot most of 7th edition already. I can't remember anything before that.

I can't speak for editions 1-6, but certainly not in 7th or 8th. 6th or 5th maybe, but I'm not sure.

Only 2 examples I can think of in my 13 years of experience:
1) Necrons and "We'll Be Back" - completely destroyed units who are allowed WBB rolls will join a nearby unit of the same type; and
2) The old Ork "Mob Up" rules, where a fleeing unit of (40k) orks would join up with some non-fleeing buddies.

So far's I know, there's never been anything similar in Fantasy.

You can also have squads disappear, like a Wolf Guard unit that disperses into other units, and also Hive Tyrant and Tyrant Guard merge and become one unit.

oh oh, can they merge in middle of game though?

Would be nice merging units in fantasy but that would be weird for kill points and banners can you imagine?

Also, the topic says "type." How could I do the merging of a Swordmaster unit with a White Lion unit? And how would you decide who's command is up front? It would make me giggle though....

Characters of a different unit type can join units of a different type.

a Character monster can join an Infantry unit, and will displace an equivilant number of models his bade takes up, or he will be on the side of the unit. he won't get a LoS though.

the same goes for any kind of character, just no LoS unless its the same unit type.
