Dwarf bronze washed with devlan "miracle" mud gives a reasonably good, bright brass.

I do a basecoat of Tin Bitz, a drybrush of Dwarf Bronze, a wash of Devlan Mud and a very light drybrush of Shining Gold.
Here's an example of how it looks on my Doomwheel.

I like VMC golds / bronze / brass.
Brown basecoat (scorched brown).
VMC Bronze
Devlan mud wash
VMC Bronze blend up to
VMC Old Gold blend up to
50-50 Old Gold VMC Silver
Blend down from the VMC Bronze to a mix of black/brown for very deep shade.
Final stark highlights with VMC Silver should be nice.

I do chainmail with a devlan mud wash, apply layers till you reach the color you want.

I had a very hard time with GWS brass. I wound up switching to Vallejo Model Color. It's a lot better. I don't do anything special with it, other then thinning it.

What?
OP: I use dwarf bronze with a shade of devlan mud. I then do a bit of highlighting on the edges using chainmail. Works pretty well for me.

Brass is often a good opportunity for a bit of verdigris weathering (very fashionable these days!).
I use a wash made from 1-1 dark green and turquoise for the base shade, with white added for the extra layers; looks great.
