Fantasy player interested in 40k here.

I've been reading on IG and the most popular builds are the Leaf Blower, the MechVet and Hybrid with lots of Infantry Squads either blobs or massed shooting sws/autocanon/lascanon spam.

Now Chimeras now matter what the build is are important and see it everywhere, I was wondering if Leman Russes are still considered competitive with people favoring to take artillery instead. Is there really no place for Russes anymore? Even the basic LRBT seems strong with AV14 and the battle canon's profile.

I've tried to deviate a little from standard leaf blower lists and the problem I have is if I use Veterans in Chimeras and Valkyries/Vendettas, I'm leaving my heavy support behind and thus the option of using 2 Manticores seem to be out of place. If I try to protect them and castle up, it seems that Vets with with guns are wasted and I feel that if they take out he Chimeras before I get in range, they are toast. I love the IG models but i kind of find it bring to just deploy a wall of Chimeras in a corner, hide my artillery behind them and just shoot all day. In short, is there a mobile IG force that is really competitive?

P.S. I love Vendettas/Valks because of the models and will include atleast 2. I love the feel and look of the Russes because they remind me of WW tanks but I won't invest in them if artillery is the only way to go. Thanks in advance.

Air cavalry lists are pretty competetive... though they do have a problem.

Well, if you love them field them! Don't be the type of player who only cares about winning. Just because a list works for someone else, doesn't mean its the best list for you.

I'll never understand why people forego models they love the look and fluff of, for something that's apparently more effective.

Vendettas are pretty much useful in any list regardless, so go nuts on them (they are pretty pricey now however)

Russes are fine. The most competitive choice is arguably the Demolisher, if you want a face-beating S10 Ap2 Russ.

They bring AV14 to an environment where everyone and their mother is packing S8 weapons. This is never a bad thing for you.

I thought the bog standard russ was?, 24" range isn't great and can be countered easily enough by a competent opponent

Ah, but when facing off against TH/SS termies who want to be up close and smashing face, they'll have to (or their land raider) move within 24" some time...

Stick Multi-Meltas on it for laughs too.

Still get 3++, there's a 1/3 chance it would scatter as well. Battlecannons are the way too go, nothing more satisfying then watching you op put a whole tactical squad back in his box

Still, I know that if I had TH/SS termies, I wouldn't want to risk walking into a demolisher cannon!

Also same thing with the battlecannon though, MEQ are usually in Rhinos or in cover. Still, both tanks are both very good, I just prefer the Demolisher since I run power blobs and both units synergize quite well (powerblob for bubblewrap and demolisher for the pie plate of death).

Don't get me wrong but I am taking the Valkyries/ Vendettas as I have 2 already. I'm just planning my purchases out. I don't want to buy 3 Leman Russes to realize that it doesn't complement the list I want. I am just trying to figure out if a non-static IG list exists.

Demolishers are absolutely awful against TH/SS terminators. The single template will miss half the time, or hit one or two models with a 3+ save.

Yeah, that was just an example of where something may be entering the Demolisher cannon's range and you'd shoot it.

Of course the ideal tank of the day when facing TH/SS Termies is the executioner with plasma sponsons, but if you have a demolisher, the St 10. Pie plate of doom can also hurt them...
