I am currently thinking of creating my own custom chaos character for 40k, however with this in mind i would like to give this character a background. i want to give the character a great fluff background and know how the backgrouns should go but i have a question. is it possible for grey knights to be converted to chaos? the whole idea is that the emperor sent a band of gray knights to a planet (can't decide which) prior to the Horus Heresy. The band consisted only of grey knight terminators (their leader is also in terminator armour) these grey knights are surprised by what they find on the planet, a shrine to chaos gods. basically the story would see their leader descend into madness at the hands of the chaos gods, it would be close to a version of a 40k khalac swordsworn.
I was hoping to write about the character but I don't know if grey knights are corruptible to this extent.
please comment so i could hear others opinions.

Great idea set some pics up when you have done some.

Tali'Zorah: I appreciate what you're doing here, Shepard.
Commander Shepard: Well, I care deeply about the quarian people.
Tali'Zorah: It's good to be back on the Normandy.
Commander Shepard: Let me know if it's too quiet for you to sleep, and I'll find you someplace louder.
Tali'Zorah: Hmm.
Garrus Vakarian: Uh, I was there when you two had your thing, remember? Just get a room and work it out. |

If you check out the GK background, I believe that you will find it stated that no GK has ever fallen to Chaos. I also feel that GK's would not be surprised by a chaos shrine, since their entire being is focussed on fighting chaos.
I believe you will also find that the GK's didn't exist prior to the Heresy.
Check out Lexicanum for more background information.
There would not be an issue (from my point of view anyway) of you using GK models to represent ornately decorated suits of power armour and then chaosing them up, so long as it is clear what the units are representing.
You also have to remember that HH era SM would be wearing much older marks of power armour, which would need to be reflected in your modeling (assuming you wanted to anyway - your models and your army).

huh, thanks I didn't realise they were only used after horus heresy. i would probably use multiple models for the new chaos lord but I want to use someone close to the emperor as my corrupted unit. part of the story is that this hero (whoever he is) is taken back to the emperor, he believes he has been triumphant and that the emperor will be proud of him. when the emperor sees the hero he knows that he has been tainted and banishes him to the warp forever. the hero is horified and as he is dragged out yells
" you are no emperor! you are false! and when i return, and return i will, everything you know will be turned to ash!"
the emperor merely sneers and says nothing as he is dragged out of his throne room. as said before this would be prior heresy. the idea is that the hero is found in the void, half mad and decaying. only chaos has kept him alive, part of the story is that he finds a helm of a mighty daemon prince, this item seems to speak to him and is the reason for his descent to chaos, part of the story is that when he and his brothers land on the planet the emperor tasked them to investigate his helm was damaged by a cultist. with nothing else to replace it he wears a chaos helm merely to replace his "once we reach the ship i will have another helm forged, for now this will have to do." his brothers protest but he silences them. this is only part of my story (trust me it is very long) but i really want to just get the base facts down first. Prior to the HH, most of the Imperium was unaware of "Choas", meaning that it would make a lot more sense that the heros of the time would be swayed to Chaos through posessed items:
Some kind of warlord or general in the Imperial Army or a captain or a lord commander in one of the SM Legions might suit the kind of character you are looking for.

While i like the idea of a imperial guard being taken over, i would prefer someone with more of an iron will. the fact that space marines are supposedly incorruptible makes the character more exiting, so i think i will have to go with an Astarte. thanks for the advise by the way, it is much appreciated.

Some of the generals of the great crusade were pretty bad ass
Plus thanks to the HH books, many of the captains and so on of the legions are accounted for in terms of MIA, KIA, loyal and traitor.
You could go for a mid level officer (such as a lieutenant) with a small strike force (a ship and a hundred or so marines with assocated support) - this gives you a good warband sized party, options for a number of different vehicles, and does not limit you to picking one of the "major players" within the Legions.
He could be rebuffed on his corruption by forces within his own legion (if he is from one of the loyal legions) and he fights to escape them, getting lost in the warp, etc, or he could encounter some higher level Imperial who would sense the taint.
The Emp himself is too far above even many of the Legion captains to interact directly with them, and if he had noticed any taint, they would not have survived

huh, yeah. this guy was going to start as a primarch who was close to the emperor (a sort of test primarch) in the above situation, whoever that didn't seem to work so i kinda gave up on the primarch idea. However now that i think about it a
primarch could be a good idea in a way but it would have to be unaccounted for somehow if it was included. regardless i am going to have to work pretty damn hard on this character.

Well, there are 2 "unknown" primarchs, however, I would be wary of using them as a basis for your army as they are often seen as being only for "Mary Sue" characters (though a well thought out character would be a change), and do have some references to them in various books.
However, if you wanted to go for some kind of "prototype marine", that would be an interesting take.

yeah, because there were 20 primarchs sent into the warp and only 18 were recovered, i think GW fiction only states that they suffered horrible accidents(i very well could be wrong about this), you could expand upon one of the missing primarchs?

personally i like the idea of elaborating on the 2 primarchs. it provides many interesting points:
1. the primarch could easily gather chaos forces to his side.
2. if he was an ally of any of the traitor primarchs he could easily join their alliance.
3. he would probably blame the emperor for any horrors that befall him as many other primarchs did.
The list could continue, personally i have always loved the primarchs (and after reading soul hunter became obsessed with knorad curz) they supply amazing stories. i have always enjoyed the fluff side of 40K due to its massive collection of ideas, this makes it feel as if you are reading a history book rather than reading a sci-fi story.
i also pay a-lot of attention to my models as i believe that if you paint models they should look like works of art (unfortunately i am a very slow painter) but as soon as i have the story down and the pieces for construction i will start the model.
Personally i like the idea that the 2 primarchs disobeyed the emperor and evoked his wrath, the emperor erased all traces of the 2 primarchs abecause he was disgraced by them. this sounds like the kind of thing the emperor would do and is the perfect reason for the primarchs to turn to chaos. my personal story would be that the one primarch died somehow and that the other primarch swore to avenge him, any thoughts?

Thanks, this will help immensely. Automatically Appended Next Post: After reading this i still wonder what happened to the primarchs. i have a theory though: what if they killed other space marines? prior to the heresy this would have been an extremely heretical thing to do wouldn't it?
