Hey dakkadakka, I'm halfway through my second read of Steven Savile's Vampire Wars and have been inspired to step away from 40k for a while and try warhammer, with the vampire counts army. So I was just wondering what kind of a 500 pt list would be decent. I'm not necessarily looking for competitive as I mostly play with friends and family (not a tournament guy) but I don't want to A) buy the wrong models, or B) get thrashed. I was thinking something like...
Leader:
(1) Vampire w/ Sword of might, and the flayed Hauberk: 140
Troops:
(40) Zombies: 160
(40) Zombies: 160
(5) Dire Wolves: 40
Total: 500
I don't have the actual army book for them, I was using one I found on a website. It claimed it was 7th ed. which I hope was most recent. As such please correct any mistakes, and any help for this list is welcome.

Ranged armies like wood elves would really eat you up - just shooting and laughing.
I think you'd do well against elite armies like brets.

If nothing else, I'd look to get Forbidden Lore on the vampire. It'll give you some casting flexibility, and the ability to use all your dice each magic phase.

I'd drop some zombies for skeletons or ghouls. Keep the zombie models for raising new units.

change 1 unit with zombies to ghouls. Zombies will probably win a fight. dire wolves imo sux in 8th. Its very hard to build a competetive 500p vc list imo Automatically Appended Next Post: *(zombies will probably never win a fight) Automatically Appended Next Post: *(Zombies will probably never win a fight).

Slaffsorre - At 500 pts I think any army is hard to be competitive. Having said that it's probably more for him to have fun, and 500pt games can be very cool. I like the idea of hordes of zombies advancing on a unit of HE or Empire swordsmen haha

Eagleeye- yeah I agree that any army has problem with 500 pts, but some armys fits more likely to it. Vc have expensive units to compensate the fact that they can be healed. In 500 you cant really get so much for healing.
All im saying that he didnt wanted to be thrashed. With that in mind all im saying is that zombies never do so well. (with the current vc rules that is)

well, looking over the suggestions ( which I appreciate) I think I'll try a couple of games with the different units offered and see how it goes.

I would replace your zombies with Ghouls or skeletons (Ghouls if you want a competitive list).
Fluff wise zombies are awesome. I would love to play my zombies, but they aren't worth the points to buy outright. I do use the Raise Dead spell all game long though. Raised zombies popping up out of nowhere can really challenge your opponents strategy!
