Go for either O&G or maybe beastmen, Tomb Kings are also a good army to get into, that is if you like apinting bones that is.

Are you looking for a different playstyle than your Vampire Counts? If so, then you should probably look into the Elven armies. Especially Wood Elves and Dark Elves have a pretty nice shooting phase, and all Elves are sort of glass cannons. This requires a playstyle different to the 'it doesn't matter if you kill a couple of models, they can be brought back'. Additionally, using the higher movement of the Elves to outmaneauvre your opponent (especially with Wood Elves) will be a change of pace from the fairly straightforward Vampire Counts march of the blocks.

Recently I've been eyeballing High Elves. I generally have a "no elves" rule but they do have a few cool appealing things.
1. Sea Guard have bows
2. Sword Masters have 2 attacks and great weapons, they also strike first even with the great weapons and with an I of 5 they are probably going to be able to reroll misses. WS6 too!
3. A core can have a magic banner worth up to 25 pts. Those 30 Sea Guard give them flaming attacks.
4. Spear wielding elves get to attack in an extra rank on top of the extra rank for spears so standard 4 ranks attack, hoarded? Then 5 ranks attack.
5. They have the plastic general and mage kits similar to empire, you can have a plastic only army if you wanted.
6. With IoB sets on ebay you can start a army really cheap for example:
1 IoB HE Set $40 Ebay
1 HE Battalion $80
1 Sword Masters - 10 for $19-$21 Ebay
1 HE Prince and Nobel Set -$19 Ebay
1 Book - $20 Ebay
$180 for a 2,000+pt army, yes please, want to bump it up to 2,500 add a $15 Teclis.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd
