I've started using citadel black with the new type pots and was wondering if anyone has experienced problems with it? It is very thin and is frankly terrible at covering whereas the old hard plastic jar mix was perfect. The only solution I can find is to mix in some Necron abyss to thicken it up, the only problem is that it takes away the richness of the colour. What is Vallejo black like in comparison?

I suppose you could buy some acrylic matte medium from an art store and mix that in if you want your paint a bit thicker. Shouldn't affect the color much.

This is happening to me with Mechrite Red, its a good thickness but the coverage is really bad.

I found that the spread of the pain is normally dependent on the base coat, most i find it better to have skull white for reds and yellows but generally needs a few thin coats to get a decent coverage on the darker blues, or for the more metallic colours i find a chaos black or mordant blue to be a better choice, my blood red and shining gold are infamous for being hard to get a decent coverage luckily i only really use them on decoration such as eyes gems screens etc where the coverage is limited to a small area

VMC Flat Black is slightly chalkier, much more matt, and it blends very nicely. I tend to use it more and more these days.

Mechrite Red coverage, weird because i had exactly the same thing last month. I assumed it was either a bad batch, or it had been stored in a hot or cold area of something. They must have changed the composition.

Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest!

I find for the base coat I have to apply it then re-drybrush over in the same colour as it doesn't seem to 'grip' large flat areas.

I can't say for certain as I'm still using the previous style Chaos Black, but it could be a bad batch. Try taking it back to GW and see what they say.
