Black can be hard to highlight and shade as most of the time the contrast is to great. I won't completely repeat information but instead just provide you this link to another Thread which should help.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

Painting a dark blue and washing black can give a good "black skin" look, as can using a mix of black and blue paints to give a "midnight blue" colour, washed black to shade, rehighlighted with the original colour and then highlighted with a slightly lighter vesion of the midnight blue, perhaps with a hint of purple.
