Hey there, am here with a problem (you probably would've guessed from the title) - I've recently received some Dark Eldar Incubi, the ones from the new Finecast range, and assembled them fine with the Citadel Super Glue that GW sell, but when I paint them the paint just seems to (I'm not sure how to explain it) shrink and not stick! I'm sure I read on the GW site that their new resin didn't need to be washed, but then in-store they said it does have to be, and so I've washed them twice over (thoroughly, with a toothbrush and washing up liquid in warm water) and the problem still persists What should I do? I was wondering whether using the GW spray paint would work?

Make sure to rinse the models and let them dry after washing.

Yup, after washing I rinsed them under the tap and left them to dry overnight. Twice!

Wouldnt it be considered defective product?

According to GW finecasts dont need priming with their high tec material.

The boast was that the models could be painted without washing and priming.

Personally I would still do so.
First of all there maybe dust and debris from cleaning of flash and seam lines.
Secondly grease from your hands can get on the model.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Primers are a sort of paint, usually in a spray can, that has better adhesiion to plastics and metals than ordinary paints.

The other thing is that if you are thinning the paint down with water the surface tension on a non absorbant surface will cause the paint to sort of "bead".

Spraying model with a white/black/other colour of choice to give a first layer and a base for the other paints. And no GW spraypaint isn't your by-all-end-all solution to priming You can pick up a decent can of plastic spraypaint at a local DIY store like B&Q or Focus.

I have to agree, this probably needs just a base coat to get going, do it either with just a layer of a solid colour or spray with a can or use the spray gun. All of the above should help, I know waht you mean, this happend when I was testing paints on the forge world Resin blocks, the paint just forms into a droplet on the model and looks watered down. It was the oil on the model.

Make sure you get a primer spray and give it a jolly good shake up

Don't spray on too thickly

If its your first time priming, make sure you choose flat acrylic type ( enamel is awful to paint on )

I herd priming it in the cold or in high humidity effects the spray as well.
And also do it in small bursts, a few thin coats > one wet gooey coat.

Do you live anywhere near a more experienced painter, possibly a friend from the GW shop who could guide you a little bit? It sounds like your model has some grease/oil/release agent on it but washing should have solved the problem, unless you washed them with warm but dirty/greasy dish water. that could make problem worse. Anyhow if in doubt ask an expert.

It doesn't make you sound like an idiot. It makes you sound like a noob, and everyone started off as a noob, so there is nothing wrong with that.

Here's a video.

And, here's an article, as well.

As others have said, you want flat acrylic spray paint. Brand probably doesn't matter. I would avoid Krylon Fusion, which goes on very, very thick. For color, use black for darker or metallic models, and use white for brighter colored models (like, if your final color is yellow? prime white).

Make sure you let the paint dry a full 24 hours before going to hand paint, or it will be soft and possibly tacky when handled.

Thanks, I'm going to paint them within the hour, hopefully will have pics up tonight/Thursday (am probably busy tomorrow). Should I put them in this thread?

It might be a good idea
Maybe change the thread title a tad and ask a kind mod to move the thread to P&M Blogs?

PS Glad you were able to solve the problem!

I'm surprised that the Finecast models needed priming when GW said they didn't.

Hang on.

Er,

Now I'm in a serious state of cognitive dissonance.

PRIME YOUR MODELS FFS. Primer is used to prep a surface to take paint, as smooth surfaces have nothing for the paint to stick to. Please tell me this was a joke. Why do people think that priming is so damn optional. It's like skipping the wiping process in the bathroom, just because someone may get away with it doesn't make it right.

Be sure to spray in short bursts about 2-3 feet away, not in long, point blank bursts. This may sound like it's obvious, but some people do it anyways.

Maybe the guy is new to painting and hasn't heard of the concept before? Because as Ouze said earlier, everyone is new to the hobby at some point. Seriously, chill.

Was this necessary?
The guy asked a question.
It was answered and he has primed the models.
