Hi Dakka!

Here I have some ideas for a new paint scheme for my guardsmen, I've gone for a sort of snow-ish theme and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas.

I was thinking of maybe painting the other shoulderpad a dark grey and placing an imperial eagle on it, but I am not sure.

Many thanks for your opinions!

PS

And yes, I did use DoW for this!

Looks good, but white is a bitch to paint.

Wow that looks pretty sick. The white looks really good too, I just suck at painting white.

My advice is to use a very light grey and work up to white as you desire. The reason being that the greys (even the light ones) have more pigment than whites do. That and it gives you a base to blend from.

I like your color scheme. As afforementioned in this thread, white can be a bitch to work with - so just be patient. I think you'll have some snazzy sh!t in the end.

My advise for painting white is not to. Paint an off white colour, it's far easier to mix a 70%white 30%grey and layer it on. Work your way up from dark greys (i.e. codex grey + white mix) to a very light grey (i.e. fortress grey + white mix). Afterwards, highlight with pure white and it gives the illusion of a very pure white, even if it's not quite spot on.

Also looks pretty similar to the scheme on my guardsmen. As for painting white, I prime them white and then to make the armor look extra crisp I paint over it with a little Skull White, if the primer didn't do a good enough job.

Its not that bad to use white on black surface.
Use codex grey
fortress grey
and white.

Ofcourse you need to do like 2 thin layers of each color to get a really nice white color.

I like the scheme, maybe add a spotcolour to break it up.
Good luck and post some pics when you've finished

Thanks everyone. So, is it best for me to start with a colour such as fortress/space wolves grey and then work up to white before applying white highlights? Or should I start with a darker grey? Or is there a specific wash I should use to highlight the gaps? I am not quite sure so any help with this would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Depends on what shade of white you want. The white I used for the model above had an astronomicon grey base.

Codex grey will give you a sort of dirty white using a similiar number of coats of white.

It's important to note that when painting white, you want to achieve an off white as your final coat so you can highlight with pure white.

I'd probably prime the models with grey primer, paint the armor plates white while leaving some grey in the recesses for shading, and wash the cloth with Badab Black. Would practically paint itself.
