Now, everybody, this thread is an important one and I hope that you use it well.

Okay, I would like to start by saying that when I first joined Dakka and got involved with this forum, there were a few RP's going, but they were good quality ones, which I soon joined, and had a lot of fun.
But recently, people have been creating so many RP's its not true. I tell them, but people just say that it has players, people are enjoying themselves, and it should be no problem. It's all okay isn't it?

WRONG

If there are too many RP's around, the regulars, such as myself, won't be able to join quite a few as they are already involved in other ones. This is especially a problem with large text based RP's, such as Blood Moon, Space Hulk, and the like. If you are in only one of them, you can do good quality, long, RP posts, and be able to develop your story and the character further.
f you are in two, it is a little harder. Your posts may not always be of good value, and you may miss a few things in one, but of course you'll most probably be able to cope.
If you go further than that, and if you are in other RP's that are not necessarily text based, your posts will largely decreaase in value, and you won't be able to do anything for the RP's.
Too many times do I see people in numerous RP's and there posts consistently lack in actual storytelling value. Tjis does nothing for the RP's, and you won't enjoy yourself.

Now, people, don't create RP's while other large ones are going on. I dunno, wait for a while, let the other RP's die down, or just finish, before posting yours up. This will give you time to develop the story further, and also, if you ahve already posted up the ideas for it, it will give a lot of time for people to take interest. Once they are over, you can post it up, and have fun.

So, thank you for reading this, and now I just ask you to use this thread wisely. Use it to post ideas for your RP, or just discuss ones which already going.

Whilst I will agree that there are a lot of RP's and games being posted currently making it hard to keep track of things, I don't think you can blame people for wanting to run their own RP's. Just because "Joe Bloggs" has a huge thread on the go doesn't mean that everyone should avoid expressing their own RP's. Currently there are quite a lot of unique RP's around. And those that don't appeal to the masses tend to get pushed down reasonably quickly.

Perhaps it would be better if Games and RP threads were seperated into two seperate forums?

Because I can rarely find the thread I'm currently RP'ing in as it jumps around so much I've simply favourited it so I can jump straight to page one and then to the last page of that thread. I know that others are posting in several threads at once, I'm not sure if thats what you meant when saying to let others die down first or not. If so then I'd agree, unless your using the same personality across all the RP's your doing it must be pretty damn hard to write consistantly.

Plus not all threads are big text based rp's, so you could get involved into more then two.

(I believe too, that you lose depth by going into multiple rp's, but you can't stop people from doing what they want.)

I think that if you want to start a RP, you should stick with it. Been in several RP's where the GM starts it and just leaves after the first few posts or so because they decided to start another new one or join a different RP.

I'm all for diversity, more RP's = more people willing to come into this forum to try out new things. I know that I wouldn't have joined in a RP on this forum if they were all the big 40+ page long RPs simply because I wouldn't keep up with reading all the posts before me.

Also if people are going to GM and start new RP's, please at least try to use good grammar and spelling. There's nothing worse than misunderstanding the initial post and GM posts that have been constructed poorly with little thought behind it at the time of writing.

No, no, I am not blaming people at all. I just believe that they should be patient, make a recruitment thread for when there is room, and not start it while theres others already in full swing.

I agree with what you are saying about how Games and RP threads were in different forums, as it would make it a lot quicker.

I believe people should wait for others to die down, before posting theres, but maybe as I have already said, have a recruitment thread to get players for it in the meantime.

Might be worth having a MOD or a well known/respected User post up a "Guidelines" thread to try and set out some guides on how to post and guidelines as the current sticky thread no longer applies as much to how the survivor forum has evolved. Its almost a "free for all" kind of thing. Granted people proberly won't read them, but new comers might as with RP's and games people tend to want to see how its played rather than randomly jump in. So a updated sticky might prove useful in the long run

Ah yes, The thread I'm currently in had a "Interested?" thread to recruit people before actually making a new thread to start the RP. I found that extremely useful as allowed players to converse a little and get all the details ironed out so they can hit the ground running when the GM creates the RP thread.

Why not posts a thread in the Nuts and Bolts asking for the thread to be split in two? (games and RP's)

I am not forcing people at all, I am just asking them "kindly", not to do too many RP's at once.

At the current time, I count four RP's that are large text based ones, and that is bad, as people such as myself would love to get involved in others, but know that we would lack value in our other posts if we do, and that we might not have time for one of them.

If people seriously want to have multiple RP's going on at once, then fine, I can't stop them, but they are missing out themselves, as others will not be able to join as they are currently part of an RP.

Thats exactly what I'm talking about.

Its a win-win for everybody, seeing as the GM gets to sort things out with the public, see who likes it, recruit people, and so on, and so on.
The people who are interested get to join before it starts, not miss out on anything, and get to say what they think of it.

In which case I think an updated Guidance thread as a sticky post, as well as splitting the forum into two sections would prove extremely useful

I agree with you in that sense, people should not just start an RP, and then finish it because they have lost interest.

I don't agree with your second point at all. People wo do not go on this forum will not join because there are different RP's, as they won't see them! If there are 40+ pages long RP's then that doesn't stop you from joining at all (but I wouldn't as I don't like to miss stuff at the beginning of the RP), in fact I think you should join if you truly want to!

Yes, yes, good GM's normally have good grammar, and know how to post sucessfully, and how to get messages aross. I hate seeing GM's who use chatspeak in the OP's.

I'll happy pop off an well thought out PM for a new Sticky and also add a thread in the nuts and bolts about splitting the forums. But I don't think I have a good track record for being listened too though. I can all but try

Well I'm happy to drum up a Guidance thread with guides and rules etc, I can then forward it to a MOD for approval. In one sense its our idea therefore we should do it if only to contribute. As for Forum splitting, thats Lego's domain and he alone will know if it warrents such an action. Its also going to be a pain for him to transfer threads across to a new forum if he agree's.

The warmachine/ FOW etc guys, wanted a battle report forum, didn't get it to few in numbers.

But i do see sense in a "guidance" thread.

Yes, basically It would be like a regular person making a new thread and the text would be a list of updated guidlines. A Mod would then mark the thread as a sticky ensuring it stays at the Top of the page for all to see always. It will never go down as new ones are posted.

I don't completely understand the ins and outs of it as my education on web forums is quite out of date but I still know enough about it to know that while the task of creating a new forum branch is easy, the thing that would take time is allocating each thread currently in this one into either the same one or the new one. Its quite arduous a task.

I'll also pop an IM to Kid Kyoto, he started this forum off, he might want some input.

Heck don't mind me, I just like to feel useful

It's interesting how we're swamped with RPs and how we have no survivor games despite it being the Survivor games & Chain Fiction forum with RPs being neither?
