Hey so I have just finished fixing my old Imperial Guard army, and only a few are basecoated. I had a dug around the cupboard and found some spray paint. It is Austrlian Export Matt Black Interior and Exterior paint. Is this suitable for warhammer models, or should I buy the proper GW stuff.

Suggestions do NOT use just any old spray paint I used to do that because I didnt know better (years ago).

Best thing you can do is either gw primer or The army painter colored primers I personally go with the army painter.

Bought 1 can of the blue and primed me up 3k+ of WoC

Check out http://www.miniaturemarket.com/home and look up army painter.
Or if there is another site that you know check them out this site has it for pretty cheap.

They are worth it and save you tons of time on IG and looks pretty good even for just being primed.

Overview of the WoC army book.

Army Painter is harder to use than regular spray paint, and definitely too much money if all you're looking for is black primer. Look at your local hardware or auto store for spray primer and just use that instead. Krylon, if it's available in Australia, is great stuff, and very cheap. GW stuff is wicked overpriced.

The black primer listed on the site is only like $8, is that still overpriced?

Considering you can get cans at a local store without having to pay shipping for 4-5, yeah. Also, Army Painter is different from regular primer. If you're not careful with it and follow the instructions on the can to a T, you can end up with fuzzy abominations like this:

But on the other hand, if you're careful with it, you can prime your army in blue or red or whatever other color you'd like, and that can save time.

Agh! That is a very unfortunate base coat. I might look around at my local stores and see if they have anything else, and then post what I find.

Long and short of it. Krylon is amazing. its a primer, meaning your paint will adhere better to it then the plastic surface. stay away from GW, army painter or ANY "miniature painting" "hobby" or anything like that sprays. they are all paint based not primer based and a huge waste of money.

I don't want to hijack the thread but I have a question for the "real primer" users:
Primer leaves a better base for paint to adhere to, because it basically is more grainy, so it leaves a rougher surface than paint, doesn't that interfere with the detail on models this small?

No, as the "tooth" is very, very fine. If you look at any models here on Dakka, I can guarantee you that almost everyone uses primer and it doesn't interfere at all.

Probably work

Another +1 for Krylon here. Costs about half what Army Painter does and it's more available.

Is anyone an Aussie in here? If so, do you know if Krylon is avilable in Aus?

How is it harder to use than regular spraypaint? I've never had any problems with it.

I tend to agree with what some of the posters have said about army painter. I used it for the first time recently and it produced a less than fine surface. I think it may be something to do with the nozzle releasing too much paint.

I've never had a problem with it. Works great for me. The nozzle also appears to be the same as the ones on the GW cans.

Humidity, temperature, and spraying technique also play a huge part in how the prime coat looks.

Test spray it on some sprue. you will soon see if it is gonna be a bad idea to use it on your models. In fact if you stick 3 bits of sprue together like a czech hedgehog, you won't even waste the paint. . .

I have used a number of different black and white matt rattle cans. My favorite is Halfords automotive primer. Worst, Holts Matt black (it wasn't very matt.)
GW works ok, but quality is veriable (No! Really?) I probably won't buy another tin of GW black ever again.

I reckon with the right (weathered and rusted) paint job, this could turn out brilliantly with that texture.

I completely agree.
Krylon is good, but the stuff you already have might be good also. Get some sprue or a spare figure, or just a few extra bits that you aren't going to use and try it out. No point in buying something new if what you have might work.

I've used Krylon, Rustoleum and several varieties of hardware store brand spray paint and never had a problem with any of them except Armory brand that came out like the Army Painter picture above. Just be sure to use light coats and test spray first.

The only time I usually insist on Krylon (my favorite, but twice the price of other cheap sprays) is when I'm using it as the primer and basecoat. They have great grey and ruddy brown primers and Camo colored sprays that are good for this.

What Krylon do you use?

They have a brand called Fusion that they sell here.
They also have primer (but ironically couldn't find white, only black and gray).

Will test it on some spare marines lying around this afternoon. If succesful then I shall have my guardsmen flocked and primed in time for dinner.

Personally i use the Krylon camo ultra-flat black because it actually is a flat black not "satin" like the gw stuff.

What comment are you referring to? I cant find a recent post by you on this thread.

Thats why people have said to test the paint on spare bits or a sprue, so that you dont spray dodgy paint straight onto your models.

Ok, I just sprayed an old mortar sitting around and I am waiting for it to dry. Should I just levae it at that, or see how well paint adheres to it as well?
