Just a thought I had today about certain characters and how they survive combat. Now the traditional way to do this is pretty much I have such a brilliant save that your rank and files can't get through me. Its been proven again and again that this works very well, but there are a couple different builds that offer an alternative. Instead of saving wounds, they just try not to take them. (Note: I'm aware dwarf lords have the luxury of not having to pick between them...)

The most famous of these is probably the ogre tyrant who can be t6 and force you to reroll successful wounds against him. Anyone who has faced this beast knows how bloody hard it is to take him down without a combat lord of your own. Preferably one with the giant blade and a bazillion attacks... My version is a bit different, and from a different book.

Old Blood
Glittering Scales
Aura of Quetzl
Fencers Blades

Now I'm not sure if he is at all original, but it boils down to needing a 6 to hit him without something like enchanted blades of Aiban in effect. Throw him on a cold blood and he even has a 1+ save. Which do you guys think is actually more efficient? I mean you could swap aura and scales for armor of destiny, and fencers blades for whichever and pretty easily get him a 1+/4++ (even rerollable with dawn stone), which would be more in line with a traditional lord level combat character. Basically the title says it all, do you choose save or evade for your lords, and why?

Dwarf players are welcome to come and laugh at us if they like.

Edit: Probably should have put this in tactics, but a bit late now.

I generally go for the save option. Cannonballs don't really care much about your WS, and you're bound to fail that LOS! eventually...

Not everything can be evaded.
Not everything can be saved.

But there's a reason ward saves are so powerful and it makes armies like Daemons solid almost no matter what. If you're only ever in traditional fighty combat, evasion works great. But stuff that auto-hits or templates or spells generally doesn't care. Not saying it's bad, just something to consider.

Chaos Sorcerer Lord of Tzeench
Charmed Shield, Warrior Familiar, Talisman of Endurance
Blood Skull Pendant, Word of Agony.

3+ armor, 4+ ward.
Does a S5 hit at the start of combat, then a S8 auto hit with killing blow.
Once a game, start of combat D6 S4 hits with no armor save.

I used this guy when I got tied of Nettling Wood Elf lords soaking up the challenges.

I wouldn't go with pure "Can't Hit Me". It's too risky.
Also, if you're on foot, you might get stomped on in a challenge.

Why does it seem like whenever I think of something cool, its WoC that ruin it? Lol. In all seriousness though, point taken, I maintain however that the idea is sound, just probably going to have to use a skink for the final -1 to hit and toss a taly of preservation on him.
