So there's a running dispute at my FLGS regarding swordmasters and whether or not they strike first with their greatswords.

Can anyone point me to any articles, or reference any GW articles, which would determine whether or not the swordmasters strike first?

Kiranth is correct, and remember with that rule if their Initiative is higher then their target they re-roll misses.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Remember that the rule for re-rolls is same init or higher.
So swordmasters re-roll to hit against anything that is Init 5 or less, that doesn't also have always strike first.

High Elves do not have Always Strikes First. They have the army specific rule Speed of Asuyrian (not sure how that is spelled...) that gives them Always Strikes First with any close-combat weapon, period.

A small but signifigant thing to be aware of.

How does that change things though? The rule states that all high elves with this rule gain the "always strikes first" rule. It's really not a significant thing to be aware of actually.

They have a special rule that gives them ASF with any ccw... facing an opposing unit with ASF, you go to I order.

So, really Speed of Asuyrian doesn't change things that much. Other than they keep ASF with Great Weapons.

You strike at the same time if you both have always strikes first, and no one gets the re-rolls (pg 66).

The difference between Speed of Asuryian and Always Strikes First is that with SoA it doesn't matter what weapon you use, you still strike first all the time. It basically removes the 'strikes last' part of Great Weapons.

This is all on the HE FAQ, by the way.

yes, carefully re-reading that rule you will notice it is written "-Have the always strikes first special rule *regardless of what weapon they are wielding*"

as was said, the minor part of the sentence makes all the idfference
