just wanted to make sure of the lance rule. you only get the S5 I5 power weapon from the first charge or all charges?

First charge only, it's a one shot weapon.

First time they fight in close combat they are all used up. If you get charged, you get no bonus and you do not get to use them if you survive.

Hmmm, not got a codex here but I would have thought it is only the first charge where you choose to use them?

i.e. If a squishy unit came into range you could chose to ride up and chop em with your swords. Assuming they won that assault, next turn their desired heavily armoured target is in range and gets the full lance treatment.

Obviously this runs the risk of losing the chance to use lances, RR being squishy themselves?

Yeah, No.

If they get charged before they have ever charged, and survive, they will still have their lances. There is nothing in the RR Hunting lance rules that says they lose them after the first "combat" nor any other such nonsense.

The first sentence of the Hunting lance rules states thus: "Rough Riders use their hunting lances the first time they charge into close combat, after which they cannot be used again."

This is the only place that discuses thei "One-shot-ed-ness"; the next sentence is the lances S+I, and the next-and-final sentence tells us that they are non-second CCW bonus compatible.


Notprop: "ride up and chop em with your swords" This is pretty much the definition of charging; since Charging is, you know, the only way you can move into close combat. So, yeah you go aftewr that squishy unit that comes into range, and congatualations you have now charged and therefore will be using your lances.

You can however allow the "squishy unit" to charge you and save your lances; but with a handful of WS3, S3, T3, 1A, 5+Sv; there is not going to be much you will survive charging at you, so it is best just to go ahead and either completely avoid the wrong targets, and charge the crud out of any decent targets first chance you get.

Rough riders are fun fluff wise, but they seem to be a niche unit in gameplay. Come to think of it, IG is simply a whole bunch of niche units...

I have seen them used well a few times by some guy at my FLGS, but then somebody else tried to use them and had the problem of charging the wrong unit and got slaughtered when he finally got to the terminators. Be careful about target priorities.

Fluff-wise they don't even make sense; Cavalry in any "modern" fighting force(and IG is at least on par with a "modern fighting force") serve as rapid infantry.

The fluff takes the Polish cavalry unit's Charge against german tank forces(something that never actually happened) idea and runs with it.

If anything the Rough riders should be equipped the same as any guardsman infantry unit, but be given either bike-like movement stats(12" move), or the hunting lances should be reloadable(seriously, who brings a single "shot" for their most useful weapon).

Failing that if they wanted Rough riders to represent "feral world troops" then they should also give the option for full on Swordsmen(Maybe a single unit or platoon; with full plate, sword and shield, Shield and Plate represented via Carapace armor, and sword and shield granting the 2-ccw attack bonus); or even keep the shield and plate carapace, but also give them Laspistol and CCW.

Point is RR alone do not represent feral troops.

rough riers are really only useful against an opponent without squishy units, if they know what they can do they will just screen their big guns with a meat shield
