Found this interesting tidbit on Warseer
Hi guys. I'm not known as a particular spurious rumour poster, but I havn't seen this in the rumours, so I thought I'd put it here, for those in the know to debunk or confirm.

I went into my local gw today to get some fnecast mandrakes, but went to the post office to collect my razorwing fighter from maelstrom, which arrived a good couple of weeks after official release.

I had the maelstrom box under my arm, and as soon as I walked in the local manager went on the defensive.

As we talked he told me that GW were finally stopping trading with independant retailers, which I must admit, doesn't suprise me. He said that with the australian/new zealand embargo, GW had basically had enough with companys like maelstrom, and would cease ALL trading with them.

This is an issue close to my heart, as our gaming club is at an indie retailer. This will definately have a big impact.

So, this was from a manager at my local GW. I hope it's not true, but I would not be suprised if it was.

Obviously since this is coming from a manager , there is no way to judge whether this rumour is true
But after the Embargo, I don't know if this is out of the question anymore
and yes apparentlly this will apply to ALL retailers

Thoughts?

Why would they stop selling to retailers?

The moment they sell it to them they have profit.

Don't get it.

Since its not official and its coming from a manager as the source, I'd say so
Again take with large amounts of salt

I personally don't think any business with a lick of sense would take a shotgun to themselves like this, effectively dropping their profits by half
But after these recent decisions, I don't know if its out of the question anymore

This sounds very like GW lol.

How to make money fast? Don't sell to retailers and get all the profit.

I think perhaps he meant online retailers, as that has already happened and the guy in question had a Maelstrom box under his arm. It would be dumb for gw to stop selling to other retailers (and not just gw dumb, dumb even for them !)

Although GW never cease to amaze me in their unabashed stupidity, I think this is beyond even theirs realms of idiocy. I would imagine that the idiot in all of this is the GW manager, he probably knows 30% of the embargo information in and has filled in the gaps himself and come up with that.

Having said that I would not say its a curse. In Cambridge we have a very nice GW store and also a really cool Independent called Inner Sanctum. Inner Sactum does not sell ANY Games Workshop. They stock basically everything else and do a good CCG trade. Although its not been an easy ride they have done really well in general, especially with the recession and everything

I think its common knowledge that managers in GW stores know less than the common public. Even the manager at my local GW says he finds out about most upcoming new releases by visiting Dakka and Warseer.

As for GW not selling to independants: that be crazy talk. It's probably not so bad here in the UK where a GW is in every town, but in the US where 90% of income is sourced from FLGS? Don't think so.

Are we starting this kind of thread every time some dumbarse local GW store manager says this or that ?

And what is this about:

but went to the post office to collect my razorwing fighter from maelstrom, which arrived a good couple of weeks after official release

The Razorwing was released last saturday, yes? So wtf is this guy talking about. Makes me doubt the source to begin with.

I'm sure GW views independent retailers as a necessary evil these days, but it's very unlikely they can afford to stop doing business with them altogether.

In the US, without independent retailer support Games Workshop would have a laughably small market, with the bulk of its current customers quickly being snapped up by other game companies that aren't so arrogant as to treat the retailers that carry their product as enemies. I don't believe that there's any truth to this, it's just a case of a grumpy GW store manager running his mouth.

Sounds like total crap.
Such a severe form of mental disorder on the management level would have been stopped before.
It's just a local GW manager snapping when provoked openly with a Maelstom box.

How would GW even know it was a Maelstrom Games box? Most of the time Maelstrom send items in discreet brown boxes, and the only way you know it's Maelstrom is if you look at the post label, which again has a small discreet logo on it.

Unless that store manager is extremely nosey, or the OP was flaunting the box under his nose (which may explain why the manager went on the defensive) I can't see how parts of this story add up.

I'm not calling the OP a liar, but it occurs to me that there might be crucial parts of this story missing.

I wouldn't believe this rumor. It sounds more like the manager throwing a hissy fit because he didn't meet his sales quota and seeing a customer bringing in minis from a competitor.

But he's not buying minis from a competitor thats the most hilarious thing about this whole idea. Perhaps from the small vision of a *Store* then his store isnt getting sales, but that razorwing was sold TO maelstrom FROM GW.. so they already made their sale

The thought of cutting out all retailers is pretty damn foolish, as its just like selling to customers (without a bit less profit of course)

The only way that I could see this coming true is if GW revisited the sins of the past to open new stores in locations already being serviced by FLGS's while simultaneously cancelling accounts. They'd become a monopoly of distribution overnight.

This could be a deathknell to those stores relying on GW's business as a major income source, but that's not something that GW would concern itself with, is it? The main obstacle with this tactic is the upfront investment of setting up shop and the long-term costs involved, something that GW's already said it wants to minimize.

I'm not feeling the truth behind this rumor, but I can see the seed of it's potential.

But to a certain degree, it is a lost sale. It's my understanding that GW provides discounts for wholesale purchases on sliding scale, i.e. the more you buy the less it costs, thus reducing the profit that GW takes in. Local retailers can't order on the level that Maelstrom can and thus make GW more money overall.

You've not worked in retail on commission have you? Bob the Redshirt has a quota or he'll get, you know, fired. Bob the Redshirt doesn't give a flat if its GW. You just bought product that he could have sold you, from somewhere else. To Bob the Redshirt you're a big bag of now. Plus other people may see the box and start buying from someone who is not Bob the Redshirt, which means you're an ongoing stinky long term big bag of , not just a short term greasy wiener dog fart.

If Bob the Redshirt doesn't think this way, he has no future in sales, and should go back to his mother's basement as a future failure and stain on the good name of used car salesmen everywhere.

I disagree with this. If I've bought a DVD from one store and go into another to buy a different DVD, I've done nothing wrong.

It's the customer's prerogative to buy where they please. It's the manager/worker's job to be pleasant and serve the customer in order to make them want to buy from them instead of the other guy next time.

Common courtesy has nothing to do with this unless the dude was waving the box around in the store and yelling at others about how they're getting screwed.

Regardless of the ethics issues being discussed here, I don't believe this for a second.

There is 1 games workshop in all of New Jersey. I'm sure there are other states with 0. They need the independent stores.

Strictly internet retailers.. maybe I could GW coming up with something to throw a curve ball at them.

Honestly I don't believe it myself
It would be the equivalent of killing yourself, because as everyone has pointed out, in the US and I know here in Aus, there just aren't that many stores

But then I didn't think they would do the embargo either, because thats a huge sale loss and I imagine it was a PR nightmare when it happened
