Is this part of a contest to see who can start the most implausible rumor? These forums continually amaze me.

I heard that GW is being bought out by Microsoft and that 40k is being incorporated in all Windows Mobile devices in 2012.

I think what you're manager meant was the indipendent DISTRIBUTORS, not independent retailers. That is definitely a rumor that has been percolating within GW for a few years now.

There is an attitude that not having an insanely optimized, one shot, six stage, omnidirectional, inevitable, mousetrap of an assassin list army somehow means that you have foolishly wasted your life building 500 points of pure, 24 karat, hand rolled, fine, cuban fail. That attitude has been shown, under laboratory conditions, to cause cancer of the fun gland.

Im from Saint Louis, there was oone GW a while ago, but that closed, i now rely on FLGS, if GW stopped selling to them, I would definitely switch to Warmahordes and just keep whatever 40k i had and play with them...cuz that would suck...really hope this rumour is BS. or im gonna be

Doubt if there is much to worry about as others have said.

As we talked he told me that GW were finally stopping trading with independant retailers, which I must admit, doesn't suprise me. He said that with the australian/new zealand embargo, GW had basically had enough with companys like maelstrom, and would cease ALL trading with them

The above quote seems to confuse the on-line retailers and independents.
Others will know "companies like Maelstrom" better than I bit was under the the impression that FLGS and internet traders with bricks and mortar stores are regarded somewhat differently.

Given the recent change of trading rules to non-EU countries, I can see that GW may wish to wash their hands of the likes of Maelstrom and Wayland. But that surely does not necessarily mean they will stop supplying FLGS's?

Obviously since this is coming from a manager , there is no way to judge whether this rumour is true
But after the Embargo, I don't know if this is out of the question anymore
and yes apparentlly this will apply to ALL retailers

Thoughts?

I have heard something similar but it was only in relation to Hobbycraft in the UK. It went along the lines that they had an agreement with the previous owner of Hobbycraft and the new owner wasn't honouring it so they wanted to get out of it as soon as they could. Hobbycraft didn't implement the price rise due to VAT in the UK on GW lines I think. I do know that Hobbycraft have a duff selection of GW stuff so that may relate to it. Reading between the lines it seems that GW are fine about independent retailers but not happy about retailers offering massive discounts. This is because the discounts keep people from coming to smaller local shops that do more to feed the hobby. While the nature of capitalism would suggest that whoever can undercut most gets the trade, there's only so far that some people can go. This has a bigger impact in regions where part of the overheads are importing the goods into the country in the first place.

I could maybe see GW trying to tighten the screws on online retailers (like how in the US online retailers can't sue shopping carts) but it's unlikely to be particularly successful and hurts some of their best sales people.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

Yeah, from pretty much every aspect of business and capitalism, this makes absolutely no sense. I doubt there is any truth to this at all.

I imagine that outside of the UK, this would be corporate suicide. Given the source (the manager not the OP) and the general caliber there-of... I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

Even in the UK, it would be a stupid move.

Let's face it - this isn't a rumour, more a complete fabrication.
