Do you have an interest in this hobby to be the best general, lord, tyrant etc or do you do it for the fluff, the modelling, the painting, the overall satisfaction of building an model or army.Me,i do it for the painting. It is relaxing and rewarding after spending a few hours doing something you really like(although my wife says i waste too much time on my plastic crack habbit!)

Because it's a fun way to hang out with my friends. Isn't that the only reason to play anything? To have fun? If it's only "to win," you shouldn't be playing. We've lost a number of people like that in my gaming area because they couldn't handle losing. No Charlie Sheen-esque people allowed

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

It is a fun game, most of the nice people at the game store I want to hang out and chat with play 40k.

Oh, that wasn't a personal attack, don't worry. I'm just saying in general. Looking back, I see how it might have looked that way. My apologies. I just added the 'charlie sheen' thing since you said "Duh, winning!" I figured you were kidding anyway

Yeap no worries. I have a thick enough skin to realize it was not a personal attack. And even if it was, not to care.

I just think it's catchy. Because any day I am having fun, I am winning.

Because it gives me an excuse to hang out with my friends and do something fun together. Hell, I even game with my dad sometimes. I enjoy the game itself, and painting and modeling is my zen/escape sort of dealie to relax.

If you play to win then always remember "The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy, but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can recover. That is the meaning of victory."-Solar Macharius

I play because DE is one of the few armies that is in every respect a challenge to play and it's fun to see how people react to the army.

Both.

My grandfather got me into miniatures painting(he casted his own lead figures; mostly infantrymen from WWII); after he passed I started doing it on my own as a way of remembrance.

I got into RTS video games, and then into wargaming for something a little more "realistic"(also I was sick to hell of "zerg-rush" tactics in all RTS games).

It's the feeling of truly being able to do what I want and play how I want (following the rules of course.) No game is ever the same.

I enjoy the strategy and playing the game, And in my other free time I enjoy the painting and the building of the models. I have found through the years that I have been playing that I seem to enjoy each seperate part as it's own hobby that simply get to all work together. Plus it's something that me and my wife both enjoy doing.

I initially got into it so I would have a miniatures game to play with friends.

After I got too sick to go out gaming at all, I held onto it a little because I could play at home with my brother.

After my brother quit, I tried playing against myself, but it just wasn't any fun. It was actually worse than not playing at all.

A few years later, I got some Sisters of Battle because I finally got over the whole, "I can't play as a girl!" thing which I had as a kid. I started painting them, spent a few days on then for about six hours a day, before losing my dedication - as I tend to do with everything.

Eventually though, I was griping to my mom about what the point was of getting WH40k minis if I couldn't even play with them. My mom offered to game with me.

Now it's almost two or three years later, and I'm still gaming with my mom and having lots of fun. ^^ She likes to play Space Marines because it's what she learned on, and what I like to play changes every few months, or sometimes every few days.

So I'd have to say, looking at the pattern, that I game socially. It's quite ironic - in a colloquial sense - that someone with such social anxiety as myself likes to be so sociable. I don't like to do stuff on my desktop quite so much, because it means essentially isolating myself in my bedroom. So I have a laptop I can game on, and spend much of my time on it in the living room. When I didn't know anyone who played World of Warcraft after my brother took a break, I stopped playing it. When he and my dad started/started again, I got back into it.

I am very much into the game because it appeals to me in many different ways. In no particular order:
-it's fun to play with other people
-the minis are cool
-I can field significant-size armies and feel like I'm fighting a proper battle
-(only for when I play Sisters of Battle) Boobs!
-the fluff is damned good
-it makes for good roleplaying material
-it's fun to talk about

Squatting with the squigs

THE only reason i play this game is orks. For me it has always been orks. Their awesome mentality and the fact that although other races think they are stupid, they still have awesome technology is just awesomesauce. Orks to me stand out as different to the rest of warhammer40angst. They just don't give a squigs arse. The rest of the fluff looks like it was written by a slowed emo, but orks!...they are positive, have fun, and if someone blows their arm off...well gork it, they just go to the mek for a new one. I love their outlook, i dunno playing orks is fun, not coz of the random stuff, but because ...ORks are awesomesaucesaucesauce. /end gush

I think i just broke the record for the number of uses of awesome in a paragraph. Who cares, orks are awesome.

Well they may get a new leg and cranium with that arm, as a player of the Emo Space Marines (dark angels for their interesting fluff) I have to say orks are a nice changeup of the grimdark, they are completely happy with their lot in life.

I love playing, I love modelling and I guess I even love the painting, even though I complain about it all the time. On top of that I find the fluff fairly engaging, even if it is incredibly silly at times.

I'm an all-round victim of 40k.
