Doesn't have to be 100% horror, even suspenseful is fine.
but well written movies that doesn't depend on sudden spooks to scare us

Event Horizon was pretty awful, but John Carpenter is great.
Even though it's pretty dated, the original version of The Shining still freaks me out.
Das Boot isn't straight horror, but should be the textbook definition of suspenseful.

Below is a good under the radar horror movie about a haunted submarine with a poltergeist sabotaging the boat during the middle of WW2.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

Also, whoever decided Black Devil Doll is a suspenseful film is clearly trolling to the max.

Lots of Horror films have "well written stories" behind them, problem is the " written story" often doesn't translate to film very well...or is poorly handled.
For example, I recently watched " The Beast of Bray road", pretty good little Werewolf story...but the film...blargh...pure B-movie.
Now, An American Werewolf in London or The Howling...those are good examples of well done story to film translations.

On a serious note, unlike most of my other entries - I think Slither was very well done; the characters, dialogue, etc are great.

Due to the fact that I'm admittedly desensitized to horror films, I let my Daughter watch Poltergeist a few months ago.
First time in years that she's appeared at the bedroom door claiming she was to scared to sleep.

The part with the clown doll, seemed to touch on a few childhood fears.
And pretty much any scene with Zelda Rubinstien, simply because her voice makes me laugh.
