Subject: DE Ravagers - What's the point of Disintegrator Cannons?

So, I've got a few Ravagers, and I've made one of them with disintegrator cannons, and now I'm not really sure what to do with it. Why would you give d-cannons to a Ravager as opposed to dark lances? Who would you field it against? (My regular opponents are Marines, about 10 different variations on the Guard, and Necrons).

My friend plays Dark Eldar and he had this same thought. He decided to slice off his dissies and replace them for lancies (how sinisterly dark eldarish). Quite frankly, the lancies have done wonderfully (for him), so I would swap the dissies with the lancies personally but if you've already attached the dissies you might as well try them out in a few games to see how they do and make up your mind after that

They do a nice job of killing MeQs and TeQs, but what it comes down to is that DE can get plenty of good anti infantry from other units, but the ravager is THE most efficient lance platform we have. Nothing else is as good to provide our AV. So, if you have some other unit doing AV, you'll be better off changing it to anti infantry and that dissie ravager to lances instead.

It's a hold over from old rules and models that are currently out.
Disintegrators used to have 2 firing modes; neither was exactly their current profile.
Max was 36" S7 AP2 Blast(in other words a Plasma cannon without get's hot).
Sustained fire was 24" S4 AP3 Heavy 3.
In the new codex they blended the 2.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

More specifically, the old codex had STR7 AP2 36" plasma blast templates. Three of them per ravager. Infantry fell in swathes. Anti-tank came from all the raider dark lances, and wyches could come in units of five with two blasters each. Warriors were elites in a wych cult (and vice versus for a kabal) so the warriors had 10 point dark lances inside their dark lance raiders.
When the new codex came out....we lost much of our anti-tank ability in MSUs. Units of 5 wyches can't make double blasters anymore. Otherwise I'd have a fleet of venoms with wyches in them. Dark Lances went up in price by 150%. And disintegrators got smacked around with the nerf bat until they caved into submission.
Yes. I actually think the old codex was more powerful than the new one. I extensively played both. Competitively.
At any rate, Disintegrators now are no longer worth consideration, because the bulk anti-tank available elsewhere that we used to have we no longer do - and have to make up for it with the ravagers.

Being effectively AP 2 heavy bolters means there is little desire to run them, as S5 isn't good (not strong enough to really threaten vehicles, not high enough volume to really worry infantry in cover) unless it doesn't cost you much. In this case it costs you lance weapons... Yeah, opportunity cost is too high on that. Honestly the only place I could see the use of the things is on raiders that were purchased for lance squads (duality), but most people just take venoms for anti infantry (cover often negates the AP2).
