So, basically, if I like a character's rules and equipment, say Lelith Hesperax, but want to use another mini, should I be allowed to do so?
Of course, the WYSIWYG applies (can't use a grot and say 'Hey, this is Wazdakka Gutsmek!) I'm especially thinking of characters that have no models (in which case it is, of course, a yes) but that you want it to be represented differently than what's described in the fluff.
Let's go back to the Lelith exaple, I want to use her profile and wargear, but I want to use the model of an Archon. Or I want to use the profile of... Prince Yriel, and want to use the model of a WHFB witch elf model.
What say you?

Sure, so long as it had all the right options, go for it.

Homegrown heroes are ok as long as they are equipped correctly.
A homegrown Ghazghkull better be a warboss, in mega armor with some sort of bionic head
A homegrown Snikrot better be carrying something that looks like two weapony blades that are not power weapons and are not PKs, also be somewhat unarmored.
I don't think your SCs have to look like the SC down tot he stock model and paintjob, but it does help distinguish IMHO. When I use Ghazghkull, it is pretty clear he is not just another Megaboss because mine looks and is painted like him, but I don't expect that from everyone.

So long as when I look at it it's clear what he has, or if there are minor things ''the attack squig I am counting as a CCW'', it's fine by my book.
I even allow things far from the look to work as long as lots of work can be seen into it, and that it was well thought out ''rule of cool''.

Squigs do make perfect close-combat weapons, no?
My main concern would be characters not represented by a model in GW's range. I'm personally considering to get the Serpent for a wych army, and I'd find a female mini better suited for the job, probably a Witch Elf or a succubus or something such.
If anything, for the sake of making things clearer, characters should have scenic bases to make them stand out of the army, there's rarely so many characters on the table that you'll forget which one's which.

I'm planning my Baron Sathonyx as we speak.
Got the Wych bodies from two Venoms, and a spare Skyboard, Glaive etc. Should be a piece of piss to make a more dynamic looking Hellion, which will stand out suitably.

I have no problem with it as long as its clear and it is replaced by something with the same base and approximative size. Replacing a figurine is a good way to test a list before to buy the models

I'm always happy to see creative conversions people have made for any given character. If somebody's running a Legion of the Damned counts-as with a cool Chaos Lord standing in for Iron Hand Straken, I'm not going to complain. Conversely, if you want Lysander leading your Marines but have your own idea for how the Salamanders' equivalent to Lysander would look, then go for it!

Yes, 94%, sometimes I prefer custom models over the originals because many are blech or old or both, like Mephiston for example.
(specifically now though, not a proxy, something artisitically crafted to match the character!)

I'll be doing this, since I like how Vulkan works, but my marines are a silver/red coloration. So I'll be converting a model to represent Vulkan instead.
