Are Necrons even the least bit competitive against ANYONE? I mean, all anyone has to do to kill you is go for phase-out. I've got two monoliths, but my opponents just ignore them and kill my guys. Guard players just spam templates, Marines just use plasma and terminators, and god forbid I challenge the Dark Eldar... No matter where I leap to on the table or how I set up, I get raped. I just feel like I've wasted my money here. Maybe I just suck? I just don't know. What do you guys think? Are Necrons worth it? Is it just me?

Well played Necrons are quite competetive. With a new Codex coming out soon, they will have an edge until people figure out successful tactics to fight them off.

Well against I guard template spam I have to say get a Monolith in the middle of their launchers, remember a decent tactic for necrons is to put a monolith with your warriors, it tends to scare people off

Chaos are pretty much the bane of Necrons. Their lack of reliable S8 or AP1/2 weaponry makes plague marines all the tougher, and berzerkers (or even regular CSM) kick arse in combat. All that and having a fleeting close-combat-capable battlecannon on legs murders warriors.

I noticed that today... I'm hoping the new codex will remedy that, at least to some degree.

List is:
2x Monolith
14 Warriors
14 Warriors
12 Warriors
5 Destroyers
Tomb Spyder (I know I probably need another one for this to be effective)
Lord with Rez orb
1635 points or so.

But my friend who plays guard/chaos is smart... he just ignores the monolith and melta/template blasts me to Hell until I phase out. I've done much better against the guard though: I did manage to move the monolith right into the midst of his army and did some pretty considerable damage, but, as I've said, he's learned that the monolith is, as he says, "a distraction".

ditch the excess warriors and spyder if at all possible and use the points for destroyers, they are godsends and imo the second cheesiest unit in the book

Necrons are quite good actually. Their Monoliths are some of the best damn vehicles in 40k. Their Gauss weapons are really good against anything armored. They can do pretty well against almost anything.

I was under the impression the Gauss weapons do decent damage to all types of units which was one of their greatest advantages

Well, you want honesty, here it is.

Necrons suck, they are by far the weakest book in play right now, even worse than daemons post GK release. They have vitually no FOC options, most units don't work very well in the role designed for them, and they have rules disadvantage built in with the phase out. 5th ed killed the guass weaponry being useful (glances wrecked on 6s last ed), and other anti tank shots are virtually impossible to get in the army. They are worse than terrible in CC (initiative, lack of attacks, lack of options), and rely on gimmicks to even manage to stay in games. You are far more likely to draw games than win them, but only since your guys have WBB, and 3+ armor, and rules loopholes and special abilities to get units back. They certainly can't dish the pain back though, hence why they draw often.

About the only effective builds you can make them spam the handful of usable units (usable is in comparison, in any other book they would the worst of the worst), and outplay your opponent (and hope his list isn't prepared for facing the build you brought). Oh, and builds? Competitively there is the main builds, the destroyer wing (FA filled with destroyers, probably heavy Destroyers as well), and wraithwing (which requires at least 2 monoliths). There is the slightly less good high toughness build, that focuses on immortals and any unit with T5+, but its not as good as the other two.

A three build codex, all of which requires you to be better than your opponent to even be in the game. Its possible to win with them, but its not at all easy, and its not like DE (which are hard to win with starting out, but with mastery means you are almost unbeatable).

I would like them to be better, but until they get real options, a price reduction, the removal/rework of phase out, and effective weapons, I just don't see them being much of anything. Luckily there is supposed to be a new book soon, so there is that.

Gauss auto-glances vehicles on sixes. They don't have any bonuses against armored infantry, and are otherwise just bolters.

I have only ever lost one game against Necrons, and that was in a 500 point game where we just played til everybody on one side was dead. I only had slugga boyz and he had destroyers with a lord with veil or whatever the teleportation power was. There was literally no way I could catch him, and any game with "til all of one army is dead" will be pretty stupid already. For the record, I have played against Necrons a LOT. I got to the point where I'd have my Marines just charge them for fun and still come out on top consistently. Playing against them as Guard isn't even a game, since my battle cannons wipe them out from far away. Even the Monolith, that potentially indestructable tank, gets brought low because I like Demolishers so much. As is, Necrons are in dire need of an update.

I play against necrons often, and I've found that ignoring the monolith can be... tricky. You've got 2. Start with one on the table, reserve some warriors and DS the second 'lith into the middle of his lines. drop a large blast on his most valuable units, do your (2?)d6 shots on everything within 6 inches and blast away. Once you've cleared the area bring in some warriors through the portal to grab the objectives on his side of the board.
If played right Necrons are _deadly_. Wraiths will help protect you as well, use them as bubblewrap with some scarabs. Scarabs are underrated. not only are they nasty in CC, they rip apart vehicles like wet paper. Wraiths are the same. That bloody invulnerable save...>.<

My favourite tactic Two monoliths in a row, a lord behind and between, and 10 warriors behind each mono. Slowly advance a blast the **** out of everyone! Ive lost 1, drawn 3. Except against my friends Dark Eldar, and only because of the new codex and the fact he designed an army to BEAT MINE! I have no idea how many games i've played, but the wins FAR outweigh the losses (except in said friends case). I hate DE.

Everyone claims assaulting 'crons is an autowin, but when you don't *have* any assault units they become incredibly difficult and frustrating to deal with.
