It really depends on the army, I like running one in things where your fighty general is also, so you can have him chump a challenge. Also some champs can carry items

They were more useful in previous editions, where you only had one rank of attacks as standard, and could expect to lose a bunch of those if you were striking second. Against that, having two attacks from that guy in the middle was pretty useful.

This edition you've got 10 from any unit with minimum frontage, so +1 attack starts looking pretty trivial. Challenge shenanigans are useful, of course.

I take them because it just doesn't feel right not to take them in a melee combat unit. Don't know why, but there it is.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

At the current cost in most armies I'd say no. Unless your using them to protect a wizard. The points they cost across an army can mean squeezing in another unit.

In my cave, lying down and waiting for you...

I mostly use champions to challenge the enemys wizards, protect my own and sacrifice him against the enemys close combat characters. They are pretty useful but i field them because a unit without an champion seems just plain boring.

For my Orc Boyz I would never NOT take them. Seriously, for 15 points I get an extra WS, S and A, so in the first round of combat (if I get an additional hand weapon) I get 3 extra attacks at S5! Seriously, that's beyond amazing for just 15 points. ^^

Haha I know how you feel for me warrior champ with halberd in a rage banner unit kicks but sooooo hard in a challenge that will mess up a lot of other races heroes for not even half the points of what that race pays for the hero so total win.

They're good on your big combat units. If a challenge is declared and you've got a character you'd rather not have killed you can have your champion chump.

Sometimes they're a bit expensive though, and aren't always worth it.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

Same here, Ork champs a smpl awesome! Plus with the amount of lords/heroes you can fit in your list - with 8th - there is just no room for the shaman/bsb in the first rank. So for 15pts or 22-23pts you can stick your shaman/bsb in the "backyard" for better protection. Saves the points for some extra ward save or such things.

It's not often you get to pull down someone's hero with your skaven slave pawleader, but when you do it is beyond priceless.

They can be handy in tarpit-type units (for making sure an uber character doesn't buzz-saw through quite as fast) or particularly hard hitting units (for the extra attack).

It really depends on the cost of upgrade, though.

Champions are a must for Beastmen I have learned, I do want my Bray Shaman to have that extra bit of protection. And that extrtra attack is handy when you equip your Gors with two hand weapons, And they make a good tarpit for Empire and their equivalent rank and file troops.

A Bladelord with the Talisman of Loec can be quite the fighter. 3 ASF S5 attacks and may re-roll all rolls to hit and wound until the end of the phase, and force the enemies he hits to re-roll any successful saves made against the attacks is well worth the automatic death of a champ, especially if he's buffed by spells already.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Do you guys think i should run them in my State Troops, and handgunners(i like the hand gunner champ for picking out other champs with his long rifle)

Also, i always run champs with my armies, High elves, Keeper of the flame, Armour of Caledor, so he gets 2 attacks at WS 5 Strength 4, with a 2+ Armour, and a 4+ ward, and if my opponent kills him, Regrowth(with lore of life), and challenge them with him again, its even better when you use Throne of Vines, and Flesh to stone, that gives me, 2 Attacks at WS 5 Strength 4 always striking first(with a re roll probably) and Toughness 7 with a 2+ Armour, and a 4+ Ward Yes!

I've found taking champions for units of normal Orc Boyz to be insanely useful. Any other unit in the book it's pretty much useless, except for Boar Boyz. They also benefit from the +1 WS, S, A. Granted you could always spend the 15pts and find 15 more for a Night Goblin Big Boss and give him a great weapon.
