Can you have a unit in a drop pod (or any transport), then declare it combat squadded when it deploys out? (sorry, don't have my dex with me... but there is debate on one of my threads so I guess that might not solve the problem)

I've never seen it done. I'd have thought if it was legal to do so it would be common practice as I can see a number of advantages to it.

Help please.

Thanks!

Yes, as explicitly stated in the drop pod rules.

A unit disembarking from a drop pod may combat squad (assuming there are 10 of them.) You may not do this for any other transport.

It's remarkable that I've never seen anyone do this. It seems such an obvious tactic for say... sternguard where you could arm half of them with combi-meltas for cracking vehicles and the other half with plas & flamers to clean up the squishy bits inside... or split the meltas so you can go after two different targets...

Its actually a very common tactic with sternguard! I have even done it with TAC's before with success.

Note this only works for drop pods and only because the drop pods specifically state this is how it works; you cannot, for example stick a 10 man squad in a rhino and combat squad them upon disembarkation(even if it comes in from reserves holding the squad).

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

Amusingly enough the disembarking from a transport rules say "When the unit disembarks, each model is deployed.."

So you're deploying the models but not the unit.

Hopefully GW will define Deployment and a few more phases in 6th, and stop using the same word in different contexts to mean slightly different things, and define a game term when they use it, and buy each of us pony. The pony thing is more likely than the others.

I agree. Their ambiguity in terms has been a major issue in 5th. Poor quality of editing.
