Just curios how many lores of magic can one mage have? If the mage has access to multiple lores can he have one or two spell from each lore (according to his level)?

A mage can only ever use one lore unless they have a rule stating otherwise, such as the fateweaver (If I remember correctly)

Yes, otherwise magic would be cheesier than it is already.

Join the Imperial Guard. The pay's lousy, the battles fierce and you probably won't ever come back again. BUT you get a lasgun.

Fateweaver and Grey Seers get 2, one for everyone else.

Don't forget Vermin Lords, they can chose from both Skaven lores.

Besides a few items which grant you the ability to get a bound spell from another lore, like Ring of Fury, Book of Secrests, Ring of Volans, etc, the wizard can only pick one lore.

There are also a few ways for Vampires to get more than 1, one of the special characters knows two entire lores and they get Invocation even if they take the Loremaster upgrade. Aren't Dark Elves similar in that they get Power of Darkness on top of other spells?

Wait, say I have a Chaos Sorcerer and upgrade him to level 2. I take Mark of Tzeentch so would have to take that lore.

Now I take the Book on that character.

Do I now have 2 Tzeentch spells AND 1 spell from the Book?

Or lets say I'm silly enough to put a Wizarding Hat on a Grey Seer. Do I get 4 Ruin/Plague spells (possibly swapping for either skitterleap or the 13th), and then the 2 random Lore spells (one of which could then conceivably be traded down for the signature spell?)

For some reason I was under the impression you just got your new allotment of spells, since you roll for spells during deployment based on your level at the time.

I'm pretty sure that in the Wizarding Hat entry it says you cannot put the Wizarding Hat on a character who's already a wizard.

Steam - yes, you get both. Nothing restricts you from having more than one lore through these "odd" methods.

Eldar - you're mistaken.

There are also bound items which cast spells from other lores, though you don't have to be a wizard to cast with those items.

+1 to this, I am sure the book does not work like that with a mage

I always thought it turned anyone wearing it, into a level 2 Wizard.

So he wouldn't get his 4 Skaven Spells, then 2 other ones...

He would be turned into a level 2 wizard. How that level 2 wizard generates spells is where the issue arises.

You cannot compare a Grey Seer to a Chaos Sorceror as a Chaos Sorceror with a mark has a special rule. The ruling for any chaos mark actually states that they "always" get spells associated with the mark they have.

If anything a Grey Seer would now have more choices as he CAN use either his Skaven lores or his randomly chosen ones. At spell generation, for each level he knows he would roll a die, choose a lore, and generate a spell. He would still only know 2 spells. You do not get 1 spell per lore, per level. You get one spell per level, and choose which lore it is going to be from, out of the lores you know, at the time you generate your spells.

As far as the Chaos argument? I would say a Chaos Sorceror (sorceror being key here) would get absolutely no benefit from either the Wizarding Hat or the Book of Secrets.

Page 115 – Book of Secrets, second paragraph Change to “Treat the bearer as a Level 1 Wizard, who may use the Lore of Fire, Lore of Shadow or Lore of Death. He may not attempt to channel. If he ever casts a spell with irresistible force he must roll D6+1 rather than 2D6 on the Miscast table.”

Emphasis mine.

This states that the Sorceror MAY use the lore. That does not mean he HAS to use those lores. According to his mark ruling he would HAVE to use the lore associated with his mark.

According to the spell generation rules, you choose which lore you are going to generate your spells for, and then roll according to the table. If the Sorceror chooses to use the lore of Fire, Shadow, or Death he has broken the rules according to his mark. He has no choice in his lore, and by generating spells for Tzeentch, Nurgle or Slaanesh he breaks no rule.

The wizarding hat is no different. It states "The wearer is treaded as being a level 2 wizard who can use a randomly chosen spell lore." Can compared to must. If the Chaos Sorceror has a mark, he has a rule that states he "always" gets spells chosen according to his mark.

Technically Chaos Sorc would have access to those lores, but would not be able to choose a spell from those lores without breaking his mark rule.

This is concerning the book of secrets. Where in the rules is this stated? I can't find it.

A. Yes."

If you read further up, they actually issued an errata that cleared it up. Before, I would take the Book on my Tzeentch Sorceror Lord to give him a Fire spell. Since he's a mobile artillery platform anyway, another magic missile was useful. Now I just give him the Ruby Ring of Ruin for Fireball.
