A while ago I started to collect and paint up Death Korps. After realizing that buying Forgeworld models in Germany is a slight pain in the butt and the play style of them isn't the thing that really suits me I sold the hole lot on the bay.

Now my paint desk was empty again and eager for some new minis to complete. I read through the new GK codex and the possible low model count and the option for a 100% shock army convinced me to collect them. I bought a box of terminators and two strike squads, quickly basecoated them with vallejo model air metallic colors and went for a one week holyday trip.

So here I am sitting right behind the dunes of the north sea and finishing my last terminator. Here are some WIP shots of the guys already painted. I used a traditional paint scheme for them, all the guys took me around 6 two 7 hours and only the base and the force weapons needs to be finished (will be made with airbrush at home).

My current 2000 point list will consist the following minis:
- Draigo (as std. Grand Master)
- Inquisitor (FW Hector Rex)
- Vindicare Assassin (old Model arlready painted)
- 5 Paladins
- 2 10-man Strike Squads
- 10 Interceptors
- 2 Dreadknights

So there are around 32 minis and 2 dreadknights to go. I'd like to have some general comments and critics on them before moving on painting the hole lot. I tried some OSL on the standard grey knight but I'm not really pleased with the effect. I tried a different technique with washes on the terminators, still not the look I'd like to see.

Second question would be the basing. I used to base all my current minis suited for my desert theme board but I kinda got bored with it. I saw some great lava bases which achieved a nice contrast to the silver armor of the knights. I also could use my airbrush for a glow effect. Any other ideas?

Thanks for all c&c, it's highly appreciated!

Here are some pictures of the last GK Terminator and the hole squad in it's unfinished glory:

Holiday is finished tomorrow so I'm finally able to airbrush the force weapons.
For the first time I will try to spray a gradient to imitate the power weapon look, hopefully it'll look something close to this:

The GW delivery should arrive on monday.
I will build, basecoat and wash all models before starting to paint again, I'm eager to play some games with the dudes asap! First game will be against a Eldar army, I'm pretty scared about the 3D6 psy test because of runes of warding. He will most like run two buffed scatter laser walker squadrons and dark reapers with exarch. Their firepower alone is usually enough to wipe out two to three squads in one turn of shooting. Due to my low model count I see a hard game ahead!

I like the paintjob, solid all around, as for the list, the only issue I can think of is lack of mobility, generally i don't like paladins because high strength weapons insta-kill them. I'd take regular termies and use the leftover points on some rhinos for your strike squads. although that's just an idea. but I digress, keep up the good work. I'm excited to see the lava bases

Thanks for the comments!

Mobility shouldn't be a real issue. Inqui, GM, Palas and the lone Vindicare will start on board and block the center, all other troops schock (preferably) on turn 2 and start the mess. GM will make the DKs scoring, so I have 2 units with a 30" shunt move to get late objectives. I won't play that competative, we run a small league and do mostly casual gaming.

Airbrush time!

I gave the force weapons a first try and I'm pretty pleased with the results. One particular blue sprayed a little blotchy but the transition is pretty smooth overall. My masking tape wasn't the best to use either. I had to correct some transitions and my blending skills with a brush are far from beeing good.

Anyways, pictures (with some bad lightning for free):

Meh, I recognized that I accidentally hit the shoulder pad with the airbrush. Just makes me think if a OSL from the force weapons would look any good?

Alrighty, force weapons and basing is finished!
I hit the models multiple times while airbrushing the force weapons - in most cases it looks pretty much like OSL so I might consider giving that a try on all models. I'm just a bit scared that I could screw the hole mini if I'm not really careful.
The basing for my gaming table is done but I probably switch them later on for the mentioned lava bases. I tried to give the terminators a slight shadow on the base, what do you think?

I also did a 2k points proxy match (using my space wolves for GK) against the mentioned eldar.
His list was sth. like this:
Eldrad, Maugan Ra
6 Fire Dragons with Wave Serpent
2x 10 Pathfinder
12 Guardians with Wave Serpent
3 Guardian Jetbikes
2x 3 Walker with Scatter Lasers
5 Dark Reapers with Exarch

We played Spearhead with 4 objectives and Killpoints (2 points for holding an objective, 1 point for wiping a unit). It was a pretty close game all in all, I had problems with shocking my troops in time due to runes of warding. He destroyed all PAGK squads and the Vindicare, I was able to kill all but one of his standard units. Both dreadknights worked ace, they managed to kill 4 squads with their flamers and took heavy fire without beeing killed. Both DKs and the interceptors were scoring units because of "grand strategy" but I consider to make the palas scoring next time. They had serious problems getting into the action because of spearhead deployment, beeing a scoring unit would have made them at least a bit useful. In the end I won 6:4 - booyakka!

Next in the queue is a first squad of PAGKs, sadly the delivery from GW ain't here yet :(

Good news everyone!

The UPS dude finally managed to deliver the rest of the force so the painting will be posponed a little.
I want to have all models built to play some games as soon as possible!

I was able to assemble the first Dreadknight yesterday - pretty awesome model and easy to build!
After the DK was finished I opened the box of the new Finecast Draigo and was pretty shocked about the casting quality. In the past I had several FW minis from different casting processes and none of them had failures like good ol' Draigo:

Complete front part of the bolter is destroyed - even with greenstuff it'll be hard to repair.

What's that? I'm not able to figure out what it should look like :/.

These are just the more obvious failures, there are also some minor ones which could be repaired with some greenstuff.

I already sent a mail to GW in hope of a quick reply. Will they send out a replacement mini asap or do they want the bad one back first?

Great work man! I love the airbrush on the force weapons and the glow effects on the armor. Amazing work all around sir. As for the Draigo I've heard a lot of issues with his casting, I have one that came out pretty well if you would like to trade something to the US I would be willing to help Send me a pm! Otherwise amazing work bud!

Thanks for the comments tony.

I will wait for GW to reply, maybe there is a chance to exchange Draigo at my local GW store. If not I might come back to your offer!

Hooray, the Terminator squad is finally finished!

I convinced myself in adding the mentioned OSL of the force swords and I'm pretty pleased with the effects. You just have to be careful to set your airbrush pistol minimum output, use the appropriate angle of the artificial light and there you go!

The hole 2000 point is force is fully build and basecoated with black, I might take a army picture tomorrow if garden work wont keep me away from it. I also was able to swap ol' Draigo for a better casted one at my local gaming store. Still not perfect quality but workable.

Next in the queue will be the first dreadknight, rly looking forward to this beast!

Thanks Markillius!

Next mini in the queue - Mister Hector Rex:

Very WIP! This dude is Mr. complexity himself, so many small details you have to take care of! The base colors are finished now, highlights, force weapon and base will follow in the next step.

Big problem is the bended force sword, I tried to straighten it up using hot water but it just won't keep beeing straight in the end - any tips for this issue?!

To fix the sword, stick in in hot water or a while til it get pliable, then take two thin sheets of either cardboard or some other rigid, flat material and place it on either side once you bend it inot the proper placing as best you can. Then rubberband the two flat pieces to either side of the wsword and leave it al on to harden.

My suggestion anyways.

Ha! Worked, thanks for the tip.

Here are some pictures of the finished mini - I'm not pleased with the look of the force weapon and might get back at it in the future. The Problem is a blotchy red which just won't spray smooth enough for a nice blending. I really want to give him a red glowing force weapon because it'll suit him the most so I might try a different color brand.

Next in the queue - Monsieur Draigo!
