So we all know that most of the time Regiments are a "one-time-thing", where the regiment is raised and shipped off in a tithe, then pretty much forgotten about. When the regiment is destroyed or 'retires' the regimental number is recycled back on the planet for a new regiment.
But some planets, such as Vostroya, like to keep their regiments constantly supplied with new recruits and such. These regiments have centuries old history detailing their victories and campaigns, sometimes even millenia, especially if the regiment has remained intact since its founding. So does anyone have any idea what the oldest regiment in the Imperium is? Is it possible that a regiment would have such an illustrious history that would stretch back to the Vandire Heresy, or even the Horus Heresy or Great Crusade?
I'd want to exclude regiments raised on Terra, becuase they've basically participated in sweet feth all over the past couple of millenia.

Most likely the ones from Vostroya. Unless the entire regiment is destroyed in one instance, they will exist forever really. Of course, they might also merge the regiments together, but Vostroyan regiments are always getting new recruits, and sometimes the Imperium re-establishes destroyed regiments. So, to answer your question; it is possible, but quite unlikely.

I would place ,my money on Vostroya. The regiments are strict about the firstborn, constantly reinforce the regiments, and are about 12 times more dedicated compared to say Cadians or some other regiment.
All weapons are heirlooms from family members(or new but handmade and well crafted) and i cannot remember where but i will try to find the source that said that the son of a firstborn trooper will be a member of his fathers regiment when he is eligible.

I doubt there are any regiments which have maintained complete existance for the entire 10,000 year history of the Imperium aside from those on Terra.
Some regimental names and numbers have been around since the Great Crusade, but the regiment was destroyed and a new one of the same name raised.
so aside from the Merican Fusiliers and one other regiment i can't recall, there won't be any IG(or equivilant) units which will have remained in active service since the Great Crusade.

So does anyone have an idea of what the oldest would be? I understand that existing since the Great Crusade would be unlikely, but surely there is some illustrious regiment out there with a lot of history.

Without regiments named at the great crusade, the heresy and such?
The flags on the path to the throne room are said to represent the heroes of the past.
But which of these ancients has been mentioned later again?
One of the IG codices told us of the issues to identify regiments and gave an example of a regimental name found in 2 sources, but
also so far apart in the timeline it would seem unlikely its the same regiment.

well the flags outside eternity gate arent just very old regiments, just regiments that have earned huge honour in service to the Emperor, I think any regiment that has particular success will get reinforced with new recruits as needed, with the veterans and survivors becoming the new drill sergeants and specialists to train the new recruits etc.
