As the title implies I need help/advice on Iron Warriors conversion. Right now im in the planning stage and would like to get my various bits down before I start modeling. My main issue is the availability of some of these bitz (especially since im in the US), if anyone has any suggestions of where to go or alternative 3rd party bits that are readily available it would be most appreciated.

Basic troper:

Head: Max mini steam Knight head #3 (my answer to saving money on forge world Mk III helmets, I would like to use the real mark III but I cant find a large supply of them regardless)
http://www.maxmini.eu/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=60

Chest: So far 3 choices that keep inline with the theme (however I can't seem to find a readily large amount of any three, so any alternative that keeps inline with the "iron" look would be apreciated

Shoulder: I plane to use a mix of chaos and plain shoulder, I would also consider using the GW iron warrior shoulders but they seem a bit small compared to the newer ones so Im not sure if they were ment for the smaller 2nd edition figures, if any one has a pick of a marine using these shoulders or know how well they size up next to regular pads please let me know.

Legs: just using the generic chaos legs

Backpack:using either generic chaos back or generic csm back

More stuff to work out later, right now just trying to figure out where I can order large amounts from so that I can even start.

Have you seen Forgeworld's recent Heresy Era stuff? It's not budget material, but I'm sure they sell to the US and there's some very nice stuff there that's drawing me towards a Traitor Legion army of some stripe. In particular, the new Dreadnought would fit in nicely to an IW force.

did the conversion rates $33 for 5 MKIII marines without weapons doesn't bode well for my wallet.

Tell you what, How much is it going to cost to procure guitar string and the correct fantasy chaos helmets? the only other thing you need is chainmail. I might have a couple plastrons with chain tabards kicking around as well that I might be interested in trading.

If you have the patience for it though, you might want to look into sculpting your chainmail.

What about khorne beserkers? Cut the flat horns off, remove the knorne icons and you have some pretty iron looking warriors ready to go.

I also looked at berzerkerz, I don't like their poses, and their helmets are kinda meh, look too much like skulls.

if you add guitar wire and fill the gaps on these helmets, they will look like perfect Iron Warrior helmets.

Don't get the Iron Warriors shoulderpads, bro! They completely suck. They are not that well cast, and they look awful no matter how well you paint them. If you have your heart set on them, I'd be happy to sell you mine for half whatever GWS wants plus postage - that's right, I paid for them, had them delivered, and chose not to use them. Scalewise, they do match, though.

I wound up using regular old CSM pads for mine, and occasionally, a loyalist pad or two. I also used some Maxmini heads, and GWS Iron Warrior torsos - those are really nice, and I recommend them quite a bit. Here are some (zoomable) images from the gallery from when they were in progress - I've cleaned them up a bit since then, but you get the idea.

Finally managed to post my picture in my earlier post. Apart from the guys with horns, the other three are Khorne heads minus the flat bits though those custom heads look pretty fine too. The bodies are mostly beserker bits with some chaos marine bits thrown in too.

The iron warriors conversion pack may be hard to find, with the transfer to resin minis. I just ordered a set a couple of weeks ago and my game store guy said he had trouble getting them. I'm using the torsos to make MkIII armor for my Blood Angel sternguards.
I have a very good tutorial on making MkIII armor from before the FW models were available. I don't claim any credit for this, and I'd link you to the appropriate web page if I could remember where I found it, but I just copied it from some other modeller's blog on the web.
I can send the PDF if you want to PM me your email

Thank you that PDF was quite helpful, and I already found a large quantity of chest pieces that I was looking for before hand and that the tutorial recommended.

My only problem now is finding legs, just because they appear to be so expensive (even generic marine legs) though that's more of a monetary issue than anything else for me. Ill continue to scour for parts here and there, and probably order about 30 heads from Maxmini, how ever I would still prefer the actual iron warriors conversion packs.

Silver Skulls shoulder pads are perfect for Pre-Heresy IW

The Iron Warriors conversion kit is a very nice product, even if the price is a little steep. I had a pre-existing IW army that I had done using those kits almost exclusively, with the shoulder pads. Looked really good, but it was a little boring.

If you you look in the "Bitz" section under the Chaos Space Marine army page of the GW site, most of the the Chaos Legion parts are still available.... at least it doesn't say that they are out of production.

Other than that, as others have posted, guitar string and greenstuff are great for IW conversions. Good luck.

@ Eisenhorn- The Silver Skulls shoulder pads look quite nice, but they aren't exactly "perfect". The Iron Warriors pre-heresey shoulder pads, as depicted in Index Astartes Volume I, has a more robotic look to it than the Silver Skulls one does.

That being said, it would be a very good starting point.
