So my roommate wants to get into 40k and decided he wants to start with orks. He immediately bought 60 AoBR orks off ebay and they asked me to build him a small list so we can play. I told him that was a good purchase, and then built him this list.

HQ: -85
Big Mek
KFF

Troops:
30 Boyz- 185
1xbig shoota

30 Boyz - 180

Heavy: -50
2xbig gunz (lobbas)

He likes the idea of 60 boyz charging with mortar fire in the background, and i told him to throw in a big mek b/c of the 5+ (im not sure how well it'd cover 60 boyz.)

Any C&C will help!

The Boyz squads must have nobs w/ PKs and Bosspoles. That makes 60 of them at the 500 point level impossible, unfortunately.

You could talk him into a squad of Kanz/Gretchen and build him this list:

Big Mek w/ KFF [85]

Ork Boyz x30 w/ Nob (Klaw/Pole/Armor) 225

Gretchen x10 w/ Runtherd [40]

Killa Kanz x3 w/ Rokkits [150]

Total Points: 500

That's how I'd footslog in a min army.

- Imperial Fists - 7290
- Deathskulls - 6150

Aside from the lobbas you don't really have any anti-vehicle so transports could be problematic.
Big Mek w/KFF seems to be as standard.

I'm currently playing 500pt orks as three blobs, (the warboss fills the same role as the Nobs in the smallest squad), the boss poles are useful once the squad starts dropping below 10 models and because of the PKs they can take on anything. Lots of running/making sure at least half the unit is in cover though :-P

HQ
Warboss with PK 'eavy armour, cybork body and boss pole 105pts

Troops
16 boys (w/choppa+slugga) 96pts
17 boys(w/slugga + choppa) + Nob w/PK and boss pole 148pts
17 boys(w/slugga + choppa) + Nob w/PK and boss pole 148pts

You're gonna want a bosspole to be able to keep yourself from losing when the mob size shrinks. You can be tarpitted in combat for a while, and take enough casualties to require leadership. Without the poles, you can simply lose games because of failed tests. Don't let that happen to you!

Seconded, also apparently choppas and sluggas are overkill, you can apparently still table everyone with shootas :-P
(note, I beat chaos, DE and tyranids armies at 500pts earlier :-D )

I'd say keep the two blobs, but yeah, drop some boyz for Nobz. Maybe experiment with Kannons or Zzap guns instead of/as well as the Lobbas. Those Lobbas are still some darn good fire support.

And as long as even a single model of a unit is within 6" of the KFF, the whole unit is covered by it. 2 mobz? No problem.

GENERATION 8: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment.

If yer an Ork, why dont ya WAAAGH!!
