After spending a few minutes trying to think up crappy WH40k related pick-up lines, I began to wonder if there was ever a time in 40k someone could use any pick up lines. The only time I remember civilians being being brought up in the fluff was in the Imperial Navy book, Double Eagle, where it has a story about a girl who lives all by herself, works somewhere around 20 hours in the factories on this planet, and then has enough free time to go to church and then home for a two hour nap, before making her way back to work. Where is there any time for her to date, let alone find the energy to create the next generation of imperial guardsmen or space marine recruits?

simple answer, if a guarsman needed a wife the imperium would issue him one! but srsly there has to be some, i mean somebody is still giving birth to new people, guardsman and space marines are taken from the population of planets, those planets have to keep being populated. hence some kind of mating is going down

I imagine civilians do get some spare time, enough to spend with someone else. The dating period before marriage is probably short though.

The woman in Double Eagle worked in a cafe with a shift in the factory IIRC.
They have spare time enough to do things like dating i would imagine since there are bars and cubs so there must be people to go to them and drink.

Mild Ciaphas Cain spoilers, Duty Calls I think:
Also, Space Wolves booze and wench and the like; Lukas the Trickster has fluff about it. As for civilians - if you're working 16 hours a day, that means you've got a good 8 to get yourself out there!

Space Wolves don't wench... they do booze, however.
Space Marines are, given their extensive genetic re-programming and massive influx of new organs and such, not to mention the installation of the Black Carapace... more than likely non-functional.
They're also 9 feet tall, it's unlikely that a human woman would be... accommodating.
As far as the rest of the Imperium?
Entirely depends on what sort of world you come from/live on.

It's explicitly in Lukas' fluff IIRC. I don't have the codex on me but it goes against the established fluff of Marines not being able to/wanting to get with ladies.

Captain Alevez (or sergeant huron grimm) mention that space marines have no use for women when entering New Rynn city in "Rynns World."

it says
"a near legendary figure amongst Fenris womenfolk, lukas was once famous for sharing a dozen beds in a single night. But since his elevation to the ranks of the Space wolves it is Lukas contributuons to the chapters war efforts that have earned him lasting respect amongst his fellow Blood Claws."
So its his pre space wolf exploits, as a Space man he may not have any.

Okay, I stand corrected! I didn't quite remember as I haven't paged through that book or used my Wolves in some time. It's not like the days of RT where Marines had personal harems and were more or less miscreants working for the Imperium!

When you're living on a world wracked by full on chaos uprising, there tend to be more pressing concerns than maintaining your social life. Just because love CAN bloom on a battlefield, doesn't mean it should.
Anyway, since Double-Eagle is just a reskinned "Battle of Britain" just watch that movie and take a guess how romance works in bitter wartime. You also seem to be forgetting that the Imperium of Man encompasses a million worlds, and they're not ALL locked in constant combat. There will be plenty of planets where life is perfectly normal.

40k dating is quite nice, actually! Billy and Jill had such a pretty relationship on their forge world. They had to make time between shifts of course, and it was hard, but they of course needed to reproduce in the name of the imperium, and everyone deserves a shot at love, right?
And it was going quite well between them until a Genestealer clawed of Billys face and implated the Genestealer gene into Jill...
All kidding aside, on some forge worlds its probably regulated, as most things are. I wouldn't be suprised if there was some sort of grimdark explanation to relationships in the dark millenium.

It's better to look to the more-stable Hive and Imperial worlds for a better explanation than the war-torn battlefronts and similar sort of romance-destroying environs for how dating works in the Imperium.
And, on these peaceful worlds (to include the populated Agri-Worlds), how does dating work? Apparently, the same way it does in the real world. Boy meets girl (or other boy, or girl meets girl... the Eisenhorn and Ravenor series are rather clear that homosexuality isn't a crime in the Imperium) and they spend time together, do things together, romantic walks on platforms overlooking the fog-banks of the lower Hive, or just the starry night lit by the five moons of Planet Iowa, and so forth and so on.

A good proportion of the BL novels have a dash of romance within them - off hand these include:
Commissar Cain novels - he romances a wide and varied selection of ladies, his charges also have attachements within and without their units, often mention of civilians doing so
Tanith Novels - off duty soldiers and civilians, relationships in the ranks....
The two recent Night Lords Books - even in service to a Traitor Legion some of their slaves make time - likely to end badly, not easy or especially long lasting.........
Eisernhorn - people marry and have children
bars, brothels, clubs and other places to socalise are avialable to civlians, especially nobility and even guardsmen, navy ratings etc have places to let off steam, pick up girls and guys.
Human race finds a way

In order to find a woman to accomodate you, you must have one first and i dont mean a woman.
