Hey people,
If my enemy (usually Skaven) has my White Lions on the run and they fail a break test and retreat into the woods directly behind them can the Skaven horde attempt to run them down in the woods. I tried this a while ago and my (more experienced??) foe just charged into the woods after me and mowed me down. My arguement was the whole "woodsmen" rule that applies to the White Lions, I didn't think that the Skaven would've been able to move through the woods as easily as my White Lions and therefore I would've been able to escape and have time to regroup.....
Am I completely incorrect here or has my sneaky Skaven General foe tricked me?

Forests/Woods do not affect the actual distance moved. That huge horde of Skaven Slaves can move through the woods just as quickly as your White Lions.

Woodsman gives "strider(forests)", which mean you dont take dangerous terrain tests when moving through them.

See Page 119.

Generic forests are not dangerous terrain for infantry.
The only forest this is dangerous for infantry is the Venom Thicket.
If he chased you into a venom thicket, he would have to take a dangerous terrain test as he entered.
Unless that test wiped out each and every model, you'd still get caught and run down.

In short, Forest Strider on an infantry unit does almost nothing.

Caveat - I may have missed an FAQ about this, in which case i'll offer apologies in advance.

I would respectfully ask that folks reread the Difficult Terrain section closely - pretty sure it says any unit (even infantry) "moving quickly" through difficult terrain (including woods) takes a dangerous terrain test. "Moving quickly" is defined as marching, charging, fleeing, pursuing... I think one other condition (didn't bring my BRB to work). So I believe your Skaven-playing friend should've taken that test. With their Forest Strider rule, the Lions don't take it.

It probably wouldn't have saved your Lions - I'd certainly risk a few 4-pt rats to run down a WL hammer. 8-)

Because difficult/dangerous terrain doesn't slow movement in 8th, it does very little, except to cavalry & chariots, which always have to test in difficult terrain (for them, anything that isn't open ground). The d6 wounds for failure keeps most chariots clear of woods.

Woods are not classified as dangerous terrain by default to infantry. See the second paragraph of that entry to see what treats default terrain as dangerous (mainly cavalry of all types and chariots).
