Thought I'd throw up some WIP pictures of my Vangaurd Vet Hoplites. The idea came to me after seeing the ultramarine spartan in the gallery images and wanted to do something similar for my blood angels.
So far this is what I have. Waiting on an order of Spartan Shields from Scibor and heads from Maxmini to come in before I can put the finished up.

I have a question, how did you make the spears? I am planning on making scythes for my BA successor chapter's command squad, they will count as power weapons, and well, as they are pole based weapons like your spears, I am wondering how you made them.

The blades for my scythes will likely be made from 'Nid talons.

Thanks! The spears were just 0.055 music wire I believe. At least that is what the label said when I got them from my local hobby store. Not sure what units that was in, but basically it is just a tad smaller in diameter from 1/16ths of and inch metal rod. Then I used a similar sized drill bit through the hands. And yes, the shields are a bit big, but when looking at pictures of hoplites on google, the shields they carry are just bigger than their torsos in order for them to form their phalanx it would seem, so I kind of wanted to stay with a similar size.

Oh, something I meant to ask, are you going to keep the helmets as-is, or are you going to sci-fi 'em up a bit?

Yes actually, I'm thinking of adding some bits of plasticard to the cheek areas to beef them up a bit and green stuff around them. Perhaps I will add some small tubes around the base of the helmet as well. I'm open to suggestions though.

Sounds like you've got it covered then. Oh, maybe use some GS to add some lenzes to the helmets?

Well, my orders finally came in and I've attached and modified all the heads that needed some extra armor. Leaving the shields off until after painting so they aren't in the way, but I've got one with the shield attached as an example. Currently thinking of painting them in a similar fashion to my count-as Astorath.

Looks reallly good. If you want your peice to have more depth, you might want to consider putting a dark red wash on the entire peice. Overall, I really like it though.
