Well kind of a battle report, but told in story form. Didn't have any pictures because my phone has no camera and large portions of my miniature army is still very much a work in progress. It's a city of death game, (my first) we had very approximate armies of probably 1400 points?

Battle report.

The capitol city of Koskol was a city of no souls. When the planetary governor had rebelled from the Imperium he had not counted on the nearby force of blood angels carrying Commander Villarious to intercede. Retribution had been swift and deadly the city had suffered. The front had largely moved on and left it a ruined waste land. Villarious stood on the flight deck of his strike cruiser as his marines stood before him in review. Two assault squads, his own in ancient artificer armor, and the furiouso dreadnought Lazarus stood before his storm raven. The second dreadnought, belisarius was still planet side guarding a weapons depot, waiting for troopers to relieve him. They would be leaving the planet soon to the moping up by the guard.

Standing before the web way portal Caelis Sol looked over his forces one more time. Their mission was to be a quick strike, bring the Angel to battle here on this planet to keep his ship from straying into contact with Craft world Altansar. The fates had shown this was when he was at his weakest, when he would be most vulnerable. A small web way portal opened next to him, disgorging one last group from the ether. Fugen the grand phoenix lord strode out, a small troupe of harlequins following behind him. Caelis Sol bowed his head, so it would be. May the Angel fall before he could bring harm to Altansar.

The web way portal opened in the southern outskirts of Koskol. A largely bombed out military base stood before the eldar as they quickly dispersed. A small squad of guardian jetbikes sped along the right flank, taking up positions to sweep in on any units hiding in the ruins there. Rangers followed behind planning to take up position in a small building with sweeping fire over the midst of the fort. A large central building stood before them in the center of the base, it was to this that Caelis Sol led the rest of his troops. A falcon carrying the troupe and Fugen slowly made their way along the left side of the massive building, while the farseer and his wraithguard moved straight ahead. A glowing fire prism stood by in heavy support and the wraithlord Kali towered above all present. A low pitched hum emanated from the large central building as Kali approached.

Belisarius felt the auspex ping. A massive energy spike had appeared just outside the building near the old fuel dump. Generators came back online and he sent a warning to Commander Villarious. His massive right arm tingled with anticipation as his twin linked las cannons spooled up. A massive form became clear through a rent in the floor. Blinding light pierced the side of the building as he fired off his weapon, near gelatinous light played over the head of the wraithlord as it looked up at the dreadnought attacking it, but no effect registered. Shrugging to itself; Belisarius stepped off the edge of the roof where he had been standing and plunged towards the now waiting eldar war machine. Great charges of power arced from his power fist as he swung at the lithe looking eldar vehicle. Kali had drawn her wraithsword and with the guidance of it's spirit easily parried the brutish Imperial weapon, a blow of her own sounding a dull ring through the building.

Skimmers continued to spread out in a pincer movement, preparing for the farseers predicted opponent. The farseer himself moved forwards with his troops into the main building. Twisting his hands in a complicated rhythm he gathered the fortunes about himself and his squad a sense of well being suffused him and for a moment he saw a dark shadow above the massive form of the Imperial dreadnaught. Reaching out with his mind he illuminated the darkness, sharing with the wraithlord Kali where the weak point in her opponents armor was. A dread sense of foreboding was all the warning Caelis Sol needed to know his turn had arrived as well.

A dark shadow appeared overhead, racing to the North over the city before doubling back. A screeching mass of metal that appeared to have no business in the air hovered over the far edge of the fort. The fury of the angels had arrived. Descending on a trail of flame Commander Villarious and his forces landed amongst Caelis Sol and his wraithguard. Power swords traced burning patterns in the air as the space marines assaulted the Eldar invaders. Powerful but slow the wraithguard swung their massive weapons at the now too close humans, alas they were too unwieldy and two of their number fell instantly. Caelis Sol himself was engaged with the Commander, his ancient sword writhing with runes as he parried the furious attacks from the angel of death.

On the right sight of the battle Eldar skimmers came about preparing for a run on the space marines should their leader be able to break away. The crystal prism warmed up, a loud crackling forming about the crystal and then shot out, searing a path to the storm raven as it swept in over the north side of the fort. From the other side of the base quick bursts of hot light flew from the falcons weapons. The storm raven hardly even shuddered as the Eldar heavy weapons left scorch marks on the thick side armor, but no visible effect.

The battle with between the large walkers continued, the heavy dreadnoughts fist crashed into Kali's massive head leaving a tracery of cracks along the wraithbone dome. Kali turned the motion of stepping back into a quick lunge with the wraithsword, slashing into the weakened joint Caelis Sol had pointed out. Belisarius stumbled back a moment looking stunned. He brought his massive linked las cannons to fire at the Eldar lord point blank but could not seem to make the connection. A searing ghost pain reached him belatedly as he found the wicked sword which had removed his arm had pierced his sarcophagus and protruded from the back of his generator. Kali stepped back as energy rippled from sundered chambers and the Imperial dreadnought seemed to blossom open in slow motion. A powerful blast arcing out and shaking the ruins of the building.

Caelis Sol lashed out with his witchblade at the three marines facing him, the psychic charged weapon easily shearing through the first marines armor. His back handed return cut down another marine and left Commander villarious before him. Their swords slashed and jabbed through the air faster then the eye could follow. A long score traced its way down the Eldar farseers armor, and a deep gash cut into the angels thigh, clotted quickly by his super human blood.

Overhead the sky split with thunder as the storm raven began its attack run. Arcs of melta fire and heavy shells split the air as it dove upon the falcon to the west of the main building. Smoke billowed up from the Falcon and the weapons drooped as the skimmer slowly, gracefully settled to the ground. Assault marines dropped from within, preparing to charge the eldar who issued from the rear hatch. From across the ruins a crackling of fire greeted the assaulting angels. Well hidden eldar pathfinders picked off the company sergeant and three others. From the depths of the falcon a shimmering glow seemed to flow out. Multi colored figures that seemed to disjoint before your very eyes. The massive form of Fuegen, stepped out as well, laying his massive firepike against the hull of the silent falcon he released his rage at the Storm raven above. the air shrieked as it super heated, the forward compartment of the storm raven began to melt, small explosions rippling from within the thick armor as weapons systems shut down. The descended angels leapt forwards to meet the harlequins, though four of them were cut down before they could reach the shimmering eldar. The troupe master flipping up behind the chaplain turning his insides to jelly with his harlequins kiss.

Kali leapt forwards from where she had been fighting the Imperial dreadnaught and charged into the space marines as the last wraithguard fell to the crushing grip of a power fist. Kali swung her massive sword easily removing two of Commander Villarious' guards from their heads.

The pathfinders fired useless shots at the storm raven and the fire prism once again discharged a massive blast into the side of it, causing more minor explosions within the hull. The ungainly flyer arced over the ruined base, turning its attention now to the eldars other anti tank weapon. Servitors and imperials worked furiously to reroute weapons controls, slowly bringing them back online.

Fuegen charged into the swirling melee to the west of the fort as four of the harlequins fell beneath the snarling chain swords of the assault marines. The troupe master continued to flit in and out, slaying two more. Fuegens glowing axe split the final man in two. Behind them the Falcon powered up once more, it's ruse to fool the storm raven had succeeded and now it shifted it's lethal attention to the smaller rear armor of the Imperial flyer. Rippling blasts of energy cascaded over the tail and engine sections in concert with another focused blast of energy from the fire prism on the other side of the battlefield. Seemingly in slow motion the massive ship fell from the sky, explosions shuddering from its wreck. The port section shuddered and the lethal form of Lazarus stepped forth, power crackled from his close combat weapons.

Caelis Sol could feel the darkness of the fortunes swirl about him as he tired, combat of this sort was not his forte. His guard slipped for but a moment and that was all Commander Villarious needed. His power sword slipped into a soft spot beneath the armpit and the Eldar farseer fell to the ground. Kali reached out to crush the Imperial commander, but the final guard with his powerfist reached into the cracked space of the wraithlords head. Discharging all it's energy into a massive blow that sundered the resting place of Kali's immortal soul. He raised his arm in victory that was short lived as the waiting snipers finally had a target to vent their rage upon. Peppered with sniper fire Commander Villarious alone charged into the pathfinders, slaying half of them in but a moment.

Seeing an opening the jetbikes swept in at the furioso dreadnaughts rear. monomolecular blades peppered the machines generators, causing it's melta weapons to discharge prematurely into the ground. The hulking machine spun quickly on its central axis, glowing claws reaching out incredibly fast to sunder the jetbikes. Explosions surrounded the juggernaut as the entire squad was destroyed. Spinning once more it began loping towards Fugen, intent on bringing the powerful phoenix lord to his knees. The last of the pathfinders fell beneath Commander Villarious' blade and he too turned towards Fuegen and the Falcon.

Jetpack burning he sprang forwards, scatter laser fire refracting off his artificer armor, he stumbled beneath the weight of pulsar fire, taking a moment to gather himself for the charge. Fuegen saw his opening and stepped forwards quickly, his fire pike thrust forward, pressing Villarious' power sword away for a moment. The fire axe seemed to rend the air with its heat. the wrath of Khaine welled up within him. Villarious' armor seemed to peel back as the ax descended, a heat greater then the forges of mars making his skin crisp and rupture. The fire ax cleaved through from shoulder to hip across Villarious' body. He fell slowly, a look of shock that he had fallen to a Xenos warrior.

Lazarus redoubled his earth shaking gate, in an attempt to close with Fuegen and exact his revenge. Fire from the two remaining eldar tanks rippled over his massive armored shoulders, pitting the thick armorcrete. Fugen hefted the still steaming fire ax. Charging forward he struck before the ancient dreadnaught could raise a fist. One crackling arm fell from Lazarus, shorn by the fury of Fuegen's strikes. Spinning beneath a counter swing the axe flew again, thundering into the dreadnaughts shoulder and causing minor explosions rippling throughout. The final blow severed the amniotic cables leading to the husk that was Lazarus. Energy ceased to flow and the massive dreadnaught settled under its own weight, the body within it dead.

Fuegen and the few remaining eldar returned to the web way portal. Altansar would remain undiscovered for now, the future of attacking angels had been diverted, though at great cost.

Well it was a costly victory for the eldar and my first time playing cities of death. Sadly my troupe master decided to run away for the last two turns, and managed to run farther then a bolter can shoot in two turns. He was out of there! Most deadly unit had to be Fuegen, he took out the Dante style commander, a furioso, and I think it was his shot that kept the storm raven from firing for a turn. Biggest mistake I made was letting my farseer hit close combat at the start of second turn. Since the blood angels leading squad had no scatter though, not sure how I would have prevented it unless I had like a ring of guardians around him or something. Deep strike is really tough to fight off, and I think I won more through luck then anything else. The falcon and the fire prism did next to nothing against the storm raven until the end. It had a 4+ invulnerable cover save the entire game from movement and I think what finally put it down was actually a scatter laser shot. Learned a lot and I'm excited with my first battle report. Next week I may bring a real camera so there can at least be pictures. Looking forward to C&C and any suggestions with how to counter deepstrike? Thanks for reading.

Would really love some comments from anyone, would this kind of story telling battle report be appreciated by the community at large? Or should I stick with a more picture and bare bones account of what happened?

Honestly i like your writing and find you could write good fluff, but i myself prefer - battle report wise - to have turn pictures and pretty precise description of the battle, moves, etc.

I prefer to have best possible tactical overview in a battle report, much like if i was standing next to a table with two guys playing.

Interesting batrep approach. I myself also prefer something like Lord of Muck said. Maybe try to write some more and put it into a short story?
And just to be picky: Its Fuegan not Fuegen.

Thanks guys, I'll bring a decent camera and photo next time. Just ad this one in to my future army fluff.

Speaking of which, Altansar, does anyone have the actual story where maugan ra frees them from the eye of terror? I have been unable to find a copy of the white dwarf issue, or a copy online. Even signed up for the GW online version, but they don't have it archived. Sad me.

Most people prefer pictures above storytelling, but I'm the exception that proves the rule.
I liked your battlerep a lot. Don't let the pictures keep you from telling a good story!
