I've heard that monsters are solid gak in 8th edition, is there any good reason for this, or have people just figured out how to kill em.

Cheers in advance.

Monsters went from unit breakers (due to terror, number of attacks) to a support unit.

Monsters don't break ranks ever, terror test area joke, even with additional attacks due to thunderstomp they won't kill enough guys to win vrs a solid block of troops. Also while BS based shooting got weaker cannons and stone thrower war machines are more accurate then ever and can kill a monster in 1 shot with decent rolling (usually takes 2 shots).

Monsters are still worth their points, the use of them has changed however. They have gona as Casper pointed out, from breaking units to more supportive units. However if used correctly they are still by far the death of monst rank and file units out there.

Ridden monsters are rad.
They get the free 5+ ward save (shot hits rider).

It's a little easier to hit a monster with a cannon ball with no more range guessing, and a little harder to hide a monster from LOS. More than anything, though, monsters are out of favour because they can't just be used to crash into a unit and break it through sheer killing power.

Instead, you need to use monsters in combination with other units, providing the killing power to win combat, while the mass of troops denies the enemy steadfast. This kind of combined arms isn't easy and it isn't guaranteed, but it can make the best monsters very effective.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

In other words: Monsters require skill to use and people thus avoid them?

Avoiding monsters also applies to the numerous existing monsters with no sort of armor, ward or regen at all. I'm looking at you Beastmen rare slots...

Basically in a world where everything can wound on 6s, poison isn't exactly uncommon, and I've sniped more characters with a cannon than a sniper rifle/jezzail, Monsters can't survive on high toughness alone anymore. Even a Night Goblin short bow volley can do some serious damage; more with the spider totem. ( *sniff* I lov-ed you Vermin Lord. /Gir )
