I have recently returned to the 40k world from a long hiatus, and am going to put an army together. Although traditionally a Dark Angels player I like the idea of the stern-guard in the new list and so I'm running with that. Anyway, here is my first attempt at a list, and comments or tweaks would be appreciated, is the whole thing crap?

HQ

Pedro – 175

Librarian -100

Elites

10 Sternguard – 290
4 combi-melta’s, powersword, melta-bombs
Drop pod - 35

I have 10 or so point left, I originally had 10 man tacticals in rhinos with missiles and flamers and powerswords.

first off you have to many elite slots. you can only have 3. i would drop 1 or both of the whirlwinds to though. an autocannon/heavy bolter preditor is bettter for your points. i use a whirlwind once in a while, they are great for horde armies and i find them lacking against more heavily armored troops. it is good for pinning or knocking a small unit out of cover. (eldar snipers for example, no cover save!)

I have a friend that runs a similar style list, the librarian+sternguard combo can be absolutely brutal. Also you have too many elites and your tactical squads are illegal, you need 10 men in order to include a special and heavy weapon I'm afraid. How about,

HQ
Pedro 175pts
Librarian (Avenger, Smite) 100pts

Elites
10 Sternguard (PF, 3 combi-meltas, 2 Lascannons) 320pts
5 Sternguard (PF, 3 combi-meltas, HF) 175pts
Razorback (dedicated transport) 40pts
Razorback (dedicated transport) 40pts

Troops
Tac Squad (PF, Plasma Gun, Plasma Cannon) 210pts
Rhino (dedicated transport) 35pts
Scouts (Snipers + ML + Camo Cloaks) 100pts

Heavy Support
Whirlwind 85pts
Predator (AC/LC) 120pts
Predator (AC/LC) 120pts

Fast Attack
Typhoons (HB +ML) 90pts
Typhoons (HB +ML) 90pts
Typhoons (HB +ML) 90pts

Total 1750pts

Combat squad the 10 man sternguard into a) 2 Lascannons & 3 bolters and b) PF, bolter + 3 combi meltas, camp the lascannon group, put the other into a razorback with the librarian. Put the 5 man squad in a razorback with Pedro. The pred, whirlwind and speeders mess stuff up from the other side of the board, while the razorbacks and rhino charge forward. You have 250 points to play around with so you can add on assault cannons/extra armour if you want. The scouts are also useful for camping/infiltrating/outflanking onto an objective.

Hope this helps.

Going along with CaptainJay's list, I would add the upgrades on the two razorbacks (I prefer twin las or twin-plasma/las). That's 70 pts.

Add a scout squad, with power fist and combi-melta on the sergeant, riding a LSS with Heavy flamer - 170.
EDIT: You would need to combine two of your Tornadoes to do that though...

With the last 10 pts, you could buy a combi on your tactical sergeant - maybe combi-flamer for horde control in your DZ (don't want a combi-plasma on a sergeant sporting a power fist!)

My two cents

I really like the list BTW, it has a nice firepower potential.

If you're building this from the current Marine codex, you can't take squads of 6 Tactical Marines and give them special/heavy weapons. It says that you're taking 6 Marines w/ Plasma/Plasma Cannon, and you can't do that.

I would question putting the lascannons into the Sternguard. You are paying a premium on points in order to gain access to their special ammunition. Why would you then pay even more points to remove that for a lascannon shot you can get elsewhere in your list?

I understand you may need to kill some AV, but sternguard should be drop podding in and taking out troops with rapid fire AV3 or hellfire rounds, yes?

Your combat squadding them, so you then have 5 man scoring unit who can rip up most things trying to take the objective from them, the lascannons will pop transports/ID things and the ternguard can utilise their special ammo (kraken ? range 30") or as they get closer vengance rounds (ap3 hell yes), basically you've got a pretty hard scoring unit, the other two sternguard squads will be tearing up marines, like you said.
