know of a metal that gets only slightly warm but vibrates "violently" when electricity passes through it?
Some friends of mine were thinking about "unconventional methods of making music", and it got me to think of a wierd sort of instrument that could possibly sound really cool. I would just need a rod of that Metal in order to get it to work, and naturally I would need to know if it exists/is available for commercial use.
If you guys know anything like that (doesn't neccesarily have to be Metal, could be anything that would make a hum, honestly) I could draw up some specs for what I have in my head. Could possibly build one, too, if it would only cost me an arm instead of an arm and a leg...

While that would technically work, I am going to have to say.... No.
Though I suppose that sort of thing would work if assembled instead of boughten; I don't want to go through the embarresment of someone finding out that I ordered a bunch of those
Also, thinking about it, but that would be kinda short for what I have in mind.

Those vibrating pleasure things use an electric motor to generate the buzz, not just a chunk of metal wired up to a battery - so that doesn't answer the OPs question.
I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
That is not dead which can eternal lie ...
... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.
I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.

I think that if you find a metal which 'vibrates violently' it's gonna get pretty hot regardless. That said, there is no such metal anyway
Passing an electric current through a metal will not make it do anything really*. Placing it within an alternating magnetic field however.......
*At least, anything you can see. There will be some fascinating quantum interactions going on, but without an incredibly powerful microscope you won't be able to see anything

Electric transformers make quite a cool buzzing sound, but are not exactly safe to play with.
I managed to create quite an impressive sound once, my parent's microwave has a uncoated steel body, and my dad, having the electrical safety training of a toddler with wet fingers, decides to use an extension cord with no earthing wire to plug it in.
Needless to say, the magnetron would induce a current in the metal casing causing a little tingle when you pressed the 'open door' button.
While microwaving something, turned around with a metal knife in my hand, the knife got magnetised to the microwave, I got magnetised to the knife, luckily my gf was on hand to switch off the wall socket and prevent me turning into a tesla trooper from RA2!
The buzzing noise from that was rather impressive, though I felt it more than I heard it.
Perhaps you could rig up something similar, but much safer?
EDIT: Why don't you try NOT using electricity, look at Tibetan singing bowls which essentially create tones through vibrating metal.
DOUBLE EDIT: If you REALLY want to go the electricity route, I'm guessing oscilloscopes will be your friend here...

And that is why you hear people yelling FOR THE EMPEROR rather than FOR LOGICAL AND QUANTIFIABLE BASED DECISIONS FOR THE BETTERMENT OF THE MAJORITY!

so good luck and if you do find a suitable material, let the lab coats know and you could sell it for millions.
Wise man say "if they don't take their hits, you can keep shooting them. if they still dont take their hits, they must not feel pain. ergo, they are a zombie and live rounds are authorised

I also feel the need to direct you to the humble Theremin
Yeah, but is High Voltage Arcs safe to contain into a Guitar like form?
Hmmm, that Theremin would be pretty cool to have, but I imagine it's expensive and/or hard to learn. Still....

This I cannot say. All I can suggest is to ground yourself well and to not hold me responsible if anything goes awry.

At a cursory glance, I found one for about $450. Kinda pricy, though I'm sure you can find one on ebay for less. I could easily imagine one being hard to learn. I remember back in the day when I lurked the SA forums, there was a guy on there who practiced tone control on his using the vocal portion of Rock Band. It was kind of cool, he just sat the microphone in front of it and went to work.

Have you seen Anvil: The Story of Anvil?
The guy is famous for playing his guitar with dildo. Which isn't a vibrator, but still...
“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.

...I actually almost watched that film/documentary the other night...now I'm going to have to see it.
