So I'm returning to the world of minis after a decade break and having sold my smurfs, then deciding I actually miss those adeptus chappies. So, I'm beginning a new project and loved the idea of a Templar army, until all the world and his uncle began using crusader helmets and robes. Soooooo a White Templar-come-umpteenth-founding newbies chapter of fluff it is.

It'll be a little bit different, focussing on a few heavily modded figs, and not ranks and ranks of cannon fodder ( ), save for the 30 termies in progress... Not a fan of moulded armour panels, looked great when it was rare but now the cat's out of the bag, it looks weird seeing so many celtic swirls on marines. Most of the 40th century artisans must have been Irish. I do like intricately painted artificer armour but prefer bas-style relief, so (where possible) everything will be adorned with teeny-tiny freehand sculpts. Time consuming, occasionally infuriating, but great fun and satisfying as hell to finish ('I MADE that!').

Rant over. Pics to follow, tips always welcome! The chapter name is very much WIP too, btw!!

I really look forward to seeing your Rainbow Templars. You have set yourself quite a challenge. Best of luck!

I hate to threadjack, but I have recently completed some Space Marines, and happened to add Black Templar transfers to their shoulder pads! It might interest you.

Hi guys, a small update on progress so far. It's taken a decepetively long time to get to here and I'm afraid I wasn't keeping a photo log of progress untill now... So here is the company leader, sporting the God/Adam relief on the chest, Eve making a hash of a fruit salad on the top, a flaming greenskin toasting on the left pauldron and a be-maned hero on the other - was meant to be Sigismund originally, his geneseed a gift to the foundling White Templars from the Emperor to help them on their way...

The claws each have a gaping face, I thought I'd make them wisened old men, called pain and wrath or something suitably smug. the torso on the thigh will become an angel, and will have a partner on the other thigh, both having wings reaching round the back of the armour. There are all manner of ropes and cords to go on and he'll get caped up at some stage.

The frieze was a practice piece to make the wall of a shrine or chapel, with Sigismund taking the Emperor's light to chaos More fluff than poodle with hairspray! If there's any interest in the relief sculpts I do, which are freehand and on a pretty small scale, easily useable on armour and weapons, I might make tutorials if I can make time, we'll have to see. Thanks, and enjoy!

Oh and a relic weapon that is meant to be a hark back to the Templar's rocky birth from Fists' descent. It's about the size of a termie torso from top to groin, sure to make some greenskin puree!

Thanks one and all, starting to find my way round the site.

Probably start a project blog for commander guy, today I finished up some more sculpts and some brass chain from Hong Kong arrived to templar him up a bit. 99 cents postage from China? Bargain! Still debating whether they're white temps or something altogether different... as there's no fluff I guess it makes no difference.

Cheers Coz, always takes a lot longer to do than I expect when I begin but hey hoo lol it's worth it! Just finished a few chubby servito-come-cherub things for the rear armour, which looks a bit dull. I'll add progress pics when I start the blog or article thread.

Thanks, the plasticard is actually only 8cmx10cm, so smaller than the thumbnail version of the pic! It's meant to be Sigismund carrying the Emperor's light to the dark corners of the universe! *I smell cheddar* The torch arm is too long (see the standing leg length) but it draws the eye to and from the central figures more. Anyhoo, small is fun, and I'll have some pics of the chubby cherubs soon, which are 5x3mm. What scares me is I that don't use a magnifier! (ork with glasses)

Thanks peeps. I'll add some progress pics soon, the termy has gained robes front and back which look more like a sarong, but if the Armageddon Crusade moves to Hellsbeach he'll be the one with the last laugh. Also started assembling project badass chaplain. He looks mean and will be simply adorned by comparrison, but looking like he'll rend a big hunk of pain in your day. Always a good thing.

So... progress...

Commander guy has gained skirts front and back, purity seals and belts in place, although I'm scheming an elaborate cloak with v's in it which will be challenging to produce in one piece! I think the skirting-come-loincloths turned out pretty well considering that they were the first I ever made! I think having done the micro-scultps makes all else comparably do-able!! If the seven-pointed star template and various attached roping all works out I'll definitely have to to a tute!

The chubby cherubs didn't all fit on the back as I'd hoped, so the cross-legged chappy pointing skywards with a book open in the other hand has become a belt buckle accessory! They turned out quite well, with the puppy-fat look I wanted. The overall aesthetic is shaping up nicely. So still waiting on: greaves, cloak, servitor, ropes and terminator badges, unnecessarily elaborate base.

I saw a great illustration of a termy with a flail which I believe somone else has recreated already. Mine will wield two flails, because I imagine him fighting like a maniacal windmill of carnage! Anything that gets through the flails gets lightning claw treatment. Ruleswise he's buggered but he's too bad ass to care about rules. If Chuck Norris was a Space Marine...

The chaplain is built and going to get beefed up. He's got a Chaos Knights' maul and come Chaos helmet or other, as it looks better than the skull helm and is more cohesive with his accolytes. Why not an independent character? Wait 'til you see his goons!

[Thumb - IMGP4115.JPG]
Rear robes and the chubby cherubs, which will somehow be hidden behind the evilly complicated spider-pattern robes...

[Thumb - IMGP4116.JPG]
One flail mid swing, the other will be sorted soon. The front robes aren't too bad and the spare cherub became a belt buckle. Can see the angel thigh armour and Sistine-inspired chest motifs.

[Thumb - IMGP4117.JPG]
Skinny looking chaplain was made taller and will subsequently be beefed out. I like the way he's sizing up or circling, looking forward to see how he comes along.

Ok, so a small update on progress, not had much time to play with green. The spidery white templar cross poncho was a disaster, so we're going for a fetching granny shawl instead.

The base is getting a Crusader ship gothic chapel makeover, although I'm wondering whether it'd better suit the librarian or chaplain. I wanted the librarian muddied and tarnished to make his plain black more ominous looking, less ceremonial and more lived in. Same for the commander, he's got frayed cloths which would look odd in a chapel as he'd have had a refit and renovation, so maybe have him pummeling the enemy in the field as well. That leads to a non-existant librarian... perhaps looking thoughtfully out of a stained glass cruiser window? Time will tell. Here's the bits and bobs in any case!
[Thumb - IMGP4129.JPG]
Shoulder shields in place, pauldrons mean they won't fit in the usual shoulder gap.

[Thumb - IMGP4130.JPG]
The compromise granny-shawl cloak, designed to show the back armour and loin cloth whilst adding bulk and width to the model.

[Thumb - IMGP4131.JPG]
How it drapes over the arms, just about fitting past the faces on the claws.

Candles mounted on what will be black marble chapel base with stained glass window - watercolour on sanded acetate glued to another acetate to laminate it flatly, and I'll use a marker to add the leading. The window and arch structure are still WIP

Thanks Iranna. Tomorrow I begin the basing properly, which is really more of a diorama on a regular 40mm base, which will be ineresting to fit together.

Lots of wayward servitors and some sort of Trajan's Column design to go around the base pillar.

Still go to sort out the weapons on commander guy, too.

More to come!

Work's been crazy so haven't had much time for playing with green, but finally got around to starting the base I liked the mischievous renagade repair robots in Star Wars episode I (the only good feature of that installment?) and so the base is going to be littered with wayward servitors and minions, while boss man strides imperiously through them.

One guy is either galling off the platform of climbing up it, his hunched buddy either passing or knicking the book to/from him. The guy WIP on his knees will be straining to heave the chained orc noodle trophy up on to the platform behind boss dude. All slightly chaotic but they keep the imperium ticking over. Just about. There will be at least 2 more, one with the banner or flag, and the last will be the master-crafted bolter bearer.

Boss dude himself has gained some balls. For his flails. Looks like he'd be a menace if he started to spin about a bit which is the idea really.

Next steps, well the chaplain needs some ornamentation so a few mini sculpts to be done for him, he's going to look so twisted you'd think he was a Khorne nutter. Still no idea for the boss dude's greaves but I'll think of something!
