So, I figured I'm going to try my hand at modelling the bases for my necrons. They have a blackish-metal scheme, and I figured I wanted to try and model their bases to look more like a tomb world. To do that, I need black sand. Lots of it.
My question is: where can one such as myself get ahold of alot of black sand for a small price? Many thanks for responses.

Your local hobby shop, especially ones that stock rail-road modelling supplies.

My LHS supplies just what you describe, black sand (also black powder). ~$5 CAN for a small bag of it, ~$15 CAN for a 1 litre size bottle.

Janitorial supplies. Black sand is also used in commercial ash trays.

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

Hardware store for a fifty pound sack and a few cans of black paint... that bag can last forever, just put the unused portion in a bucket with a lid to keep it dry and the local cats out...

Thanks for the replies!
I never really thought about railroad modelling or ash trays. I'll have to look at both. And I know it sounds obvious to use sand and black paint, I just wanted to see if there were alternatives that looked more "genuine", I guess.

Incorporating real-life features on figures never really works. It always needs painting to fit in with the 'painted' look of mini's.

I fully agree with this sentiment. Although, I always found it funny that I would take a real life rock, put it on a base, then paint it to make it look like a rock.

Painted rocks allways look better than real-life ones!
