I recently bought the Trygon/Mawloc box, and while I plan on magnetizing the set to make it malleable, I'm curious - which is the better beasty? Trygons seem much better, although they're also way more expensive (especially upgraded to Primes). Mawlocs seem more like a big speed bump, although I imagine hit and run could be great if you can pull it off. Any advice from those more experienced against them than I?

Trygon by a pretty large margin. Much tough and much stronger in assault.
Also, I would recommend not deepstriking them. They can move pretty quickly up the table by running (and they have move through cover as monstrous creatures). Should like help you from being focused down when you deep strike.

Prime is only worth it if you need another synapse presence, the upgrades to his shooting weapon aren't really worth it (sometimes...)

Trigon... deepstriking prime gives midfield/forward synapse which can be vital

Trygon is definitely the more dangerous one. Don't take the Mawloc as it has a rule called "Lets make the game complicated and stupid for a bit while I move everything around for no good reason." Then it proceedes to die quickly to anything that touches it.

Trygon is a legitimate threat. Mawloc is a gimmick with 6 wounds.

Seeing that Jy2 uses Mawlocs frequently, I'd be interested to see how input on this issue...

When I first started playing the new nids, I loved the trygon. Awesome model, nice stats, scary as heck to my opponent. For sure he was a fire magnet. I would normally run 2 in my list for redundancy. In my more competitive lists, I would run 3.

While I tried out the mawloc a few times, he wasn't as successful. That's because my local competitive meta normally goes mech. 1 S6 hit vs R10 isn't very reliable. Then afterwards, he would die since he was in the middle of my opponent's entire army, thus suffering the wrath of all their firepower without cover nor FNP. While he was a bullet magnet, the majority of the shots that he would draw was the shorter-ranged rapid-fire guns, meltas and plasmas that otherwise wouldn't be able to target my farther units anyways. Thus, my opponent's ranged guns would still shoot at my army while his short-ranged guns which normally wouldn't be able to fire now had a target to fire against.

Add to the fact that the new Tyranid FAQ now gives you cover from the Mawloc's special attack, and that means you can't even reliably take out a squad of long fangs (or other heavy weapon units) when you pop out.

So in regular games, I prefer the trygon over the mawloc, but only if you bring at least 2. Bring just one and he'll get taken down before he will even see any action, even if you deepstrike him.

Nowadays, the only time I ever use my mawlocs is in Apocalypse games. That is because my opponents usually stuff their deployment zone with so many units (and hopefully vehicles) that when the mawloc comes out in a crowded area (with lots of units), his push-back move will actually kill vehicles and such as my opponent would have no place to move them.

Now that was back then when I just started play nids. Now, my lists have totally changed. I no longer use trygons or mawlocs in regular games anymore, at least not against good opponents. Why? Because my opponents (and I play some pretty good players) usually bring very balanced lists with enough firepower to handle my trygons. Now my nids have evolved to a more shooty tyranid build based off of the Swarmlord as a counter-assault deterrent, hive guards, tervigons, genestealers, a tyrannofex and biovores. Now I shoot my opponents off the table and dare them to assault me with the Swarmlord and genestealers there.

This is my 2K list before:
