Hi there!

I am a 40K player and thinking about starting WHFB. How is the game right now? Is it fun? Is it fluffy? is it balanced? Do you have a huge variety choosing your units or are only cookie cutter lists effective?

I am thinking about starting one of the following armies:

Orcs&Goblins
Highelves
Empire

Can you give me some insight about the game and maybe the armies i mentioned?
Thanks alot! :-)

As a 40k player i dont think money/time is going to be a problem for you...

Ive played both 40k and WHFB. I actually prefer fantasy. You dont need to worry about spreading units out, units fight in formations. Balance seems better, and magic provides a whole new dimension to the game.

If im not wrong :

Orcs : Horde race
HE : Elite army with no to little shooting, but many of the units are heavily overpriced
Empire : Best warmachines in the game, lots of varied options, good magic options

Unit lists wise, most armies will be comprrised of a battle standard bearer for LD check re-rolls(yes, LD actually matters unlike in 40k), a mage, a large block of infantry and some cavalry or elite troops for killing power. Some books are so bad that every decent list is the same though.

Empire probably has one of the most options out there.

Could always try playing online to see how it works(see sig).

Ya I am the same way as Question. ALthough I just started out WHFB this summer. I have played 40k for like 12 years. Starting in this current edition of WHFB is awesome. It is a lot of fun. Depending on how you want to play it. Either competitive or for fun I have WHFB to be as fun if not better then 40k with the special terrain pieces and magic. The difference between 40k and WHFB is that 40k is always the same experiance in game. With WHFB every game is different because of terrain and magic. Thats what makes it fun.

And as a added bonus WHFB doesnt have half a dozen different space marine armies.

Is it fun? - Yes.
Is it fluffy? - Yes.
Is it balanced? - Mostly, yes.
Do you have a huge variety choosing your units or are only cookie cutter lists effective? - I can't speak for all armies but Orcs and Goblins got massive amount of fun, good and working units. They got access to A LOT of cheap heroes/lords which you can put in to make a real killer unit, or you could build an only Goblin or Orc army, or mix both! In other words, playing O'n'G feels like having multiple armies in the same army!

And another bonus - there are a lot of different armies out there, unlike WH40k with 70% being Space Marines.

Fun fluffy and way more balanced than 40k.

The armies you listed are amongst the most competitive.
They can also be played as fun armies as in you don't have to super cheese to win.

Personally I made the switch and have been more than happy.

I would suggest read an army book maybe check out the big book.
Then depending what you like pick up a battalion or IoB if you choose HE it's a good buy.

I always get a laugh out of WHFB. Granted I play the two "funny" armies, Ogre Kingdoms and Orcs & Goblins, but I have loads of fun with them. The cool thing about WHFB is the "low tier" armies can still go out and tear good armies apart if they are played like they are supposed to be played.

Bretonnians still work, you just have to take loads of Knights, with 2-3 Trebuchets (depending on points level), bunch of infantry, and the obligatory lv4 mage.

HE have quite a bit of shooting and the units are very well costed considering their skill.
In my personal opinion Dwarves outclass empire when it comes to warmachines (price and flaming)

Being a long time 40k player I have found that your games are always different in fantasy, while 40k seems to get very stagnant very fast. It is over all a more rewarding and in my mind better written game.

Haha ya those half pints are pretty good at war machines.

Personally 40k has become too much of the same thing newest armies always win. If you buy a new army people will think your jumping onthe band wagon and good times.

Fantasy is more diverse I enjoy seeing different armies rather than IG another IG army, and oh look another IG army, now marines, back to IG and marines again, and some more IG and some GK ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Regarding balance, it's mostly fine. Then there's the part where Pit of Shades/Purple Sun of Xereus (the magic equivalents to a nuclear missile) removes your unit/half your army because you play Ogres, Lizardmen or something else with low I. It's more or less the same thing as JotWW in 40k, except you can devour a large portion of you enemy's army with one spell.

Then there's Teclis, or as he's known in my community, the "Chief of Cheddar, Captain of the Camembert, Sovereign of Stilton and Emperor of Edam", a special character whose reputation in gaming circles makes the rage about Mephiston's statline when the BA Codex was released look positively tame. While he is counterable (and not by some extreme measure, he's perfectly killable with an all-comers army), he just brings so much magic power that he's obnoxious. I say this as a High Elf player, the very book in which Teclis is featured.

Haha there is some cheese but most people can cheese back.

You can block his spells unless irresistible force.

But ya unless you play against a total cheese power gamed army its not too unbalanced.

Like you can build strong armies without being super cheesey.

Which is why Teclis is the equivalent of bringing a Battleship to a knifefight, as I'm sure you're aware...

I am more than aware of that still its very funny when you get gateway off on his unit it gets sucked into the warp and you yourself dont end up exploding.

He is not like a battle ship to a knife fight, he is more like bringing an assault riffle to a knife fight.
Its a good chance you will win but its not a for sure.

Their stupid book is gah the any doubles count as irresistible force that is harsh.
But tz has a fun spell to deal with that if it gets off.

Still shenanigans.

Which is why you have BotWD. A Battleship to a knife fight isn't really autowin either, you could still hit a mine (i.e. fail rolls, most notably winds of magic or failing to meet the casting value).

True anyways back on topic WHFB is more balanced than 40k and personally I enjoy it more than 40k being a 40ker for several years.

Yes i think you should start Fantasy, you will find it much more varied than Warhammer 40k aka Death by Astartes. Better flow of the game generaly, a wide and varied choice of armies.
If you want to go hardcore you can go with HE or Skaven, or if you want fun then you can choose O&G or beastmen. If you want a glittering horde of Knigths then take Bretonnia

I'm having a lot of fun with Fantasy. The main selling point is the beautiful models they've produced in the last year or so - that and not seeing MEQ after MEQ after MEQ being played.
